TLDR
Some but not all of the in vitro properties of IL-4 are critical for the physiology of the immune system in vivo, but the serum levels of IgG1 and IgE are strongly reduced.
Abstract
Interleukin-4 (IL-4) promotes the growth and differentiation of many hematopoietic cells in vitro; in particular, it directs the immunoglobulin (Ig) class switch to IgG1 and IgE. Mice homozygous for a mutation that inactivates the IL-4 gene were generated to test the requirement for IL-4 in vivo. In the mutant mice T and B cell development was normal, but the serum levels of IgG1 and IgE were strongly reduced. The IgG1 dominance in a T cell-dependent immune response was lost, and IgE was not detectable upon nematode infection. Thus, some but not all of the in vitro properties of IL-4 are critical for the physiology of the immune system in vivo.

The effect of safranal, a constituent of Crocus sativus (saffron), on tracheal responsiveness, serum levels of cytokines, total NO and nitrite in sensitized guinea pigs

TL;DR: These results showed a preventive effect for safranal on tracheal responses and serum cytokine, total NO and nitrite levels as well as increased Th1/Th2 balance in sensitized guinea pigs.

Humanized H19/Igf2 locus reveals diverged imprinting mechanism between mouse and human and reflects Silver–Russell syndrome phenotypes

TL;DR: The conserved maternal imprinting mechanism and function at IC1 demonstrates the possibility of modeling maternal transmission of hIC1 mutations associated with BWS in mice, and it is proposed that further analyses in the paternal knock-in H19+/hIC1 mice will elucidate the molecular mechanisms that may underlie SRS.

Murine metal-induced systemic autoimmunity : baseline and stimulated cytokine mRNA expression in genetically susceptible and resistant strains

TL;DR: H‐2‐linked resistance to Hg‐induced AFA is characterized by low constitutive expression of IL‐2 and IFN‐γ mRNA, which is not increased by Hg, and a marked increase in IL‐10 expression.

Bmp Indicator Mice Reveal Dynamic Regulation of Transcriptional Response

TL;DR: A reporter identifies specific transcriptional responses that are mediated by Smad1 and Smad4 with the Schnurri transcription factor complex binding to a conserved Bmp-Responsive Element (BRE), originally identified among Drosophila, Xenopus and human Bmp targets.

Control of allergic reactions in mice by an active anti-murine IL-4 immunization

TL;DR: MIL-4 kinoid immunization reversed the allergic IgE:IgG ratio hallmark in rBet v 1a sensitized mice and reduced pulmonary eosinophil recruitment and bronchial hyperreactivity in Ova-sensitized mice, paving the way to alternative therapies to combat allergic conditions.

TH1 and TH2 cells: different patterns of lymphokine secretion lead to different functional properties.

TL;DR: Two types of cloned helper T cells are described, defined primarily by differences in the pattern of lymphokines ynthesized, and the different functions of the two types of cells and their lymphokine synthesis are discussed.

Site-directed mutagenesis by gene targeting in mouse embryo-derived stem cells.
