Abstract: This paper examines the performance of TCP/IP, the Internet data transport protocol, over wide-area networks (WANs) in which data traffic could coexist with real-time traffic such as voice and video. Specifically, we attempt to develop a basic understanding, using analysis and simulation, of the properties of TCP/IP in a regime where: (1) the bandwidth-delay product of the network is high compared to the buffering in the network and (2) packets may incur random loss (e.g., due to transient congestion caused by fluctuations in real-time traffic, or wireless links in the path of the connection). The following key results are obtained. First, random loss leads to significant throughput deterioration when the product of the loss probability and the square of the bandwidth-delay product is larger than one. Second, for multiple connections sharing a bottleneck link, TCP is grossly unfair toward connections with higher round-trip delays. This means that a simple first in first out (FIFO) queueing discipline might not suffice for data traffic in WANs. Finally, while the Reno version of TCP produces less bursty traffic than the original Tahoe version, it is less robust than the latter when successive losses are closely spaced. We conclude by indicating modifications that may be required both at the transport and network layers to provide good end-to-end performance over high-speed WANs.

Abstract: We study the interaction of the "new" construct with a rich but common form of (first-order) communication. This interaction is crucial in security protocols, which are the main motivating examples for our work; it also appears in other programming-language contexts. Specifically, we introduce a simple, general extension of the pi calculus with value passing, primitive functions, and equations among terms. We develop semantics and proof techniques for this extended language and apply them in reasoning about some security protocols.

Abstract: It is well known that the breakthrough of Bednorz and Muller1 in discovering superconductivity in (La, Ba)2CuO4 was inspired in part by their knowledge of the superconducting properties of Ba(Pb, Bi)O3 (ref. 2). With a transition temperature, Tc, of ∼12 K, that compound was not generally considered anomalous despite the fact that its Tcis 3–5 times higher than that of traditional superconductors with comparable density of states3–5. The increases in Tc for copper-oxide-based materials continue to generate worldwide excitement, but from both a chemical and theoretical point of view it would also be exciting if high-Tcsuperconductivity were observed in another class of materials. Here we report the results of experiments leading us to the single-phase perovskite Ba0.6K0.4BiO3, which has a magnetically determined onset temperature of 29.8 K—a Tc considerably higher than that of conventional superconductors and surpassed only by copper-containing compounds. Superconductivity in this compound occurs within the framework of a three dimensionally connected bismuth-oxygen array. These results suggest that further research toward exploring the limiting Tcs for bismuth-oxide-based, high-temperature superconductors might be fruitful.

Abstract: Optical burst switching (OBS) is a promising solution for building terabit optical routers and realizing IP over WDM. In this paper, we describe the basic concept of OBS and present a general architecture of optical core routers and electronic edge routers in the OBS network. The key design issues related to the OBS are also discussed, namely, burst assembly (burstification), channel scheduling, burst offset-time management, and some dimensioning rules. A nonperiodic time-interval burst assembly mechanism is described. A class of data channel scheduling algorithms with void filling is proposed for optical routers using a fiber delay line buffer. The LAUC-VF (latest available unused channel with void filling) channel scheduling algorithm is studied in detail. Initial results on the burst traffic characteristics and on the performance of optical routers in the OBS network with self-similar traffic as inputs are reported in the paper.

Abstract: We present a framework for differential modulation with multiple antennas across a continuously fading channel, where neither the transmitter nor the receiver knows the fading coefficients. The framework can be seen as a natural extension of standard differential phase-shift keying commonly used in single-antenna unknown-channel systems. We show how our differential framework links the unknown-channel system with a known-channel system, and we develop performance design criteria. As a special ease, we introduce a class of diagonal signals where only one antenna is active at any time, and demonstrate how these signals may be used to achieve full transmitter diversity and low probability of error.
