Abstract: A 13-b CMOS cyclic A/D converter that does not need trimming nor digital calibration is presented. The effects associated with the error on the gain factor 2 as well as the offset errors are corrected by taking full advantage of the redundant signed digit (RSD) principle. The gain error resulting from mismatches among switched capacitors is corrected by a novel strategy that implements an exact multiplication by four after two cycles. As a result, offset errors do not affect the integral or the differential linearities from the RSD algorithm. The remaining overall shift caused by offsets is reduced under the LSB level by a proper choice of capacitor switching sequence. The converter achieves 1/2 LSB integral and differential linearity at 25 kS/s; harmonic distortion is less than -83 dB. Chip area is 2.9 mm2 in a standard CMOS 3-mu-m technology, including control logic and the serial-to-parallel output shift register. Power consumption is 45 mW under +/-5-V supplies.

Abstract: We present a microelectromechanical systems-based beam steering optical crossconnect switch core with port count exceeding 1100, featuring mean fiber-to-fiber insertion loss of 2.1 dB and maximum insertion loss of 4.0 dB across all possible connections. The challenge of efficient measurement and optimization of all possible connections was met by an automated testing facility. The resulting connections feature optical loss stability of better than 0.2 dB over days, without any feedback control under normal laboratory conditions.

Abstract: The range of possibilities in controlling the color of an organic semiconductor based light emitter diode (LED) by incorporating the active layers in a multimode Fabry–Perot cavity is demonstrated. The combination of carefully designed multimode microcavities and electroluminescent organic semiconductors makes possible the realization of mixed colors such as white, purple, etc. with a single LED. The parameters affecting the color include the total optical thickness of the device and the position of the electromagnetic‐field antinodes with respect to the location of the emitting dipoles. The electrical characteristics and quantum efficiency of such devices are also reported.

Abstract: The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) has two distinct modes of operation. External BGP (EBGP) exchanges reachability information between autonomous systems, while Internal BGP (IBGP) exchanges external reachability information within an autonomous system. We study several routing anomalies that are unique to IBGP because, unlike EBGP, forwarding paths and signaling paths are not always symmetric. In particular, we focus on anomalies that can cause the protocol to diverge, and those that can cause a router's chosen forwarding path to an egress point to be deflected by another router on that path. Deflections can greatly complicate the debugging of routing problems, and in the worst case multiple deflections can combine to form persistent forwarding loops. We define a correct IBGP configuration to be one that is anomaly free for every possible set of routes sent by neighboring autonomous systems. We show that determination of IBGP configuration correctness is NP-hard. However, we give simple sufficient conditions on network configurations that guarantee correctness.

Abstract: Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems have the potential to achieve very high capacities, depending on the propagation environment. Capacity increases as signal correlation decreases. We present the measurements of a MIMO system under strong and weak line-of-sight conditions. The system capacity decreases as the distance from the transmitter increases. Indeed the transmitter correlation increases as the distance increases. The receiver correlation is lower than the transmitter correlation under both propagation conditions.
