Abstract: This manuscript proposed a new novel algorithm for vertical segmentation because the accuracy of recognition will be very high if there is a good character segmentation. For the purpose of locate the segmentation points used the word image thinning to fetch the width of stroke of one pixel and to detect the ligatures of Arabic characters geometry and shape are used in the segmentation procedure. The proposed segmentation approach is worked with touching characters, in case of ligatures touching segmentation existing between the characters of consecutive closed and the existence of ligatures within characters in the case of open characters. It evaluated on IFN/ENIT, AHDB and our dataset. It shows higher accuracy with an excellent performance by decreasing over-segmentation problem which showed through open characters segmentation and correct the segmentation in cases of the touching characters or the miss-segmentation errors in images of word.

Abstract: Pigeonpea, a drought tolerant, semi-arid pulse crop has been investigated for the expression of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) under drought stress. The cDNA library of soybean leaf tissue retrieved from the Unigene database of the NCBI, were compared for in silico expression using IDEG6 web statistical tool. A list of 52 non-redundant DEGs consisting of 11 up-regulated and 41 down-regulated was obtained. Among these, more photosynthesis and light harvesting proteins were down-regulated in drought stress conditions. Pathways were assigned based on KEGG database, revealing 32 genes involved in 17 metabolic pathways. Homologous sequences of six up-regulated genes namely, ADF3, APB, ASR, DLP, LTP1, and UGE5 were then used for quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) in pigeonpea. The qRT-PCR result revealed the significant up-regulation of dehydrin-like protein (DLP) (5.02 log2 fold) and down-regulation of acid phosphatase class B family protein (APB) (9.43 log2 fold) and non-specific lipid transfer protein 1-like (LTP1) (18.81 log2 fold) in pigeonpea water-stressed leaf sample compared to well-watered leaf samples. No significant difference was observed in the stressed root compared to the stressed pigeonpea leaf sample except that APB showed an up-regulation of 11.35 log2 fold change.

Abstract: The galls of Terminala chebula (Gaertn.) Retz. (Combretaceae) are used for the treatment of various diseases in folk medicine and has been found to posses anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-helmintic, anti-tyrosinase, and anti-aging activities. Considering the ethano-botanical and diverse pharmacological applications of galls of T. chebula, in this study, we investigate the possible toxic effects of different gall extracts of T. chebula by Brine shrimp (Artemia salina) toxicity assay. The cytotoxicity test of leaf gall extracts (petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol, and aqueous) of T. chebula was evaluated by Brine shrimp (A. salina) toxicity assay, which is based on the ability to kill laboratory cultured Artemia nauplii (animals eggs) and also total content of polyphenols, flavonoids with other qualitative phytochemical analysis of the extract were determined. It was observed that the petroleum ether extract was virtually nontoxic on the shrimps, and exhibited very low toxicity with LC50value of 4356.76 μg/ml. Furthermore, the chloroform extract exhibited very low toxicity, giving LC50value of 1462.2 μg/ml. On the other hand, the ethanol extract was very toxic to brine shrimps with LC50value of 68.64 μg/ml. The ethanol extract had the highest total phenolic and flavonoid content of 136 ± 1.5 mg of gallic acid equivalent/g d.w and 113 ± 1.6 mg of quercetin equivalent/g d.w, respectively. The higher toxicity effect was positively correlated to the high content of total polyphenols/flavonoids in the extract. This significant lethality of different extracts to brine shrimp is an indicative of the presence of potent cytotoxic components which warrants further investigation. SUMMARY The present study investigates the toxicity effect of different extracts of galls of T. chebulla, which would serve as an index for formulation of drugs for treatment of various diseases. Presumably, these activities could be attributed in part to the polyphenolic features of the extract, as there was a strong correlation of higher toxic effect with that of high total phenolic and flavonoids content in the ethanolic leaf gall extracts of T. chebula.

Abstract: We have decorated nickel phthalocyanine (NiPc) periphery by four different aryl-[1,3,4]-oxadiazole pendants. Introduction of aryl-[1,3,4]-oxadiazole pendants into the NiPc core results in improved thermal stability, fine-tuning of the position of the Q-band with decrease in band gap, indicating effective electronic communication between the two different ring systems with NiPc core. The magnitude of DC electrical conductivity for aryl-[1,3,4]-oxadiazole-substituted NiPcs 3a–3d is found to be ∼105 times higher than the parent NiPc (1). The temperature-dependent DC conductivity studies reveal semiconducting nature of the newly synthesized NiPc compounds with significant decrease in thermal activation energy (ΔE) compared to parent NiPc.

Abstract: The fish assemblage and diversity in relation to water quality of three coastal rivers Sita, Swarna and Varahi of Udupi district, Karnataka, India was studied. 71 species representing 7 orders, 20 families and 41 genera were recorded from 21 sites along the three rivers. Species composition varied longitudinally in relation to the environmental factors of the habitat. The downstream change in the three rivers indicates that fish assemblage changed with increasing loss of riparian canopy cover and increasing agricultural land-use. The richness and abundance of fishes were correlated with land-use type, canopy cover, pH and turbidity. Diversion of water, discharge of domestic sewage and agricultural runoff were prominent among the disturbances that alter the habitat quality.
