TLDR
The need to consider the microbiome when evaluating human development, nutritional needs, physiological variations and the impact of westernization is underscored, as distinctive features of the functional maturation of the gut microbiome are evident in early infancy as well as adulthood.
Abstract
Gut microbial communities represent one source of human genetic and metabolic diversity. To examine how gut microbiomes differ among human populations, here we characterize bacterial species in fecal samples from 531 individuals, plus the gene content of 110 of them. The cohort encompassed healthy children and adults from the Amazonas of Venezuela, rural Malawi and US metropolitan areas and included mono- and dizygotic twins. Shared features of the functional maturation of the gut microbiome were identified during the first three years of life in all three populations, including age-associated changes in the genes involved in vitamin biosynthesis and metabolism. Pronounced differences in bacterial assemblages and functional gene repertoires were noted between US residents and those in the other two countries. These distinctive features are evident in early infancy as well as adulthood. Our findings underscore the need to consider the microbiome when evaluating human development, nutritional needs, physiological variations and the impact of westernization.

A phylogenetic transform enhances analysis of compositional microbiota data

TL;DR: The PhILR transform is introduced, which incorporates microbial evolutionary models with the isometric log-ratio transform to allow off-the-shelf statistical tools to be safely applied to microbiota surveys and demonstrates that analyses of community-level structure can be applied toPhILR transformed data with performance on benchmarks rivaling or surpassing standard tools.

Gut DNA viromes of Malawian twins discordant for severe acute malnutrition

TL;DR: It is disclosed that apparently healthy cotwins in discordant pairs have viromes associated with, although not necessarily mediators, of SAM; as such, they provide a human model for delineating normal versus perturbed postnatal acquisition and retention of the gut microbiota’s viral component in populations at risk for malnutrition.

TL;DR: The gut microbiota shows a wide inter-individual variation, but its within- individual variation is relatively stable over time, and when measures of biological age are used with adjustment for chronological age, overall richness decreases, while a certain group of bacteria associated with frailty increases.

Beneficial Effects of Dietary Polyphenols on Gut Microbiota and Strategies to Improve Delivery Efficiency.

TL;DR: Preclinical and clinical data suggest that dietary polyphenols present prebiotic properties and exert antimicrobial activities against pathogenic GM, having benefits in distinct disorders, including obesity and diabetes.

Role of priority effects in the early-life assembly of the gut microbiota.

TL;DR: How priority effects might influence microbial communities in the gastrointestinal tract during early childhood and how the strength of priority effects can be estimated from the composition of the microbial species pool are explored.

Silhouettes: a graphical aid to the interpretation and validation of cluster analysis

TL;DR: A new graphical display is proposed for partitioning techniques, where each cluster is represented by a so-called silhouette, which is based on the comparison of its tightness and separation, and provides an evaluation of clustering validity.
