TL;DR: Compared to other catalyst systems with different oxide supports, the as-prepared Au nanocluster-CeO2 nanocomposite nanocatalysts showed efficient catalytic performance in transforming nitrobenzene into azoxybenzenes.
Abstract: In this work we are inspired to explore gold nanoclusters supported on mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres as nanocatalysts for the reduction of nitrobenzene. Ultrasmall Au nanoclusters (NCs) and mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres were readily synthesized and well characterized. Due to their ultrasmall size, the as-prepared Au clusters can be easily absorbed into the mesopores of the mesoporous CeO2 nanospheres. Owing to the unique mesoporous structure of the CeO2 support, Au nanoclusters in the Au@CeO2 may effectively prevent the aggregation which usually results in a rapid decay of the catalytic activity. It is notable that the ultrasmall gold nanoclusters possess uniform size distribution and good dispersibility on the mesoporous CeO2 supports. Compared to other catalyst systems with different oxide supports, the as-prepared Au nanocluster–CeO2 nanocomposite nanocatalysts showed efficient catalytic performance in transforming nitrobenzene into azoxybenzene. In addition, a plausible mechanism was deeply investigated to explain the transforming process. Au@CeO2 exhibited efficient catalytic activity for reduction of nitrobenzene. This strategy may be easily extended to fabricate many other heterogeneous catalysts including ultrasmall metal nanoclusters and mesoporous oxides.

TL;DR: In this article, a glass waveguide amplifier was constructed in an Er/sup 3+/- and Yb/sup 4+/-doped phosphate glass, and the waveguide channels were defined via a field-assisted Ag/sup +/ diffusion process.
Abstract: A glass waveguide amplifier was constructed in an Er/sup 3+/- and Yb/sup 3+/-doped phosphate glass. The waveguide channels were defined via a field-assisted Ag/sup +/ diffusion process. A net gain of 4.1 dB was measured at 1534 nm in a 3-mm length waveguide.

TL;DR: The method has been successfully applied to the detection of THC-COOH in hair specimens from known marijuana users, and it reaches the levels currently proposed in the Federal Register.
Abstract: The proposed federal regulations for the detection in hair of 11-nor-Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (THC-COOH), a metabolite of marijuana, require a confirmatory detection level of 0.05 pg/mg. At present, the only way to achieve this on a routine basis has been with the use gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS) technology. Tandem MS is an expensive approach and dissuades laboratories from attempting to enter the hair-testing market. A procedure for the determination of THC-COOH in hair using two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC) coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-GC-MS) is described for the first time. The method makes use of several small improvements in the extraction, GC, and MS procedures to allow the required sensitivity to be achieved. The results of this approach demonstrate detection of THC-COOH in hair at a concentration level of 0.05 pg/mg with both a target quantitation ion and a unique confirming qualifier ion, using a single-quadrupole mass selective detector. These two ions and the enhanced separation of the GC-GC provide a high degree of confidence in the determinations. The method has been successfully applied to the detection of THC-COOH in hair specimens from known marijuana users, and it reaches the levels currently proposed in the Federal Register.

30 Oct 1998TL;DR: In this article, a cost-efficient hardware implementation of the fiber channel arbitrated loop initialization protocol is presented, where the minimal buffer size required for storing information extracted from fiber channel Arbitrated Loop initialization frames and including a memory buffer having this calculated minimum size.
Abstract: A fiber channel interface controller incorporating a cost-efficient hardware implementation of the fiber channel arbitrated loop initialization protocol. Cost efficiency is achieved by determining the minimal buffer size required for storing information extracted from fiber channel arbitrated loop initialization frames and including in the fiber channel interface controller a memory buffer having this calculated minimum size. The inherent buffering capacity within all FC ports of the arbitrated loop and the ability to generate, on the fly, large portions of fiber channel arbitrated loop initialization frames, rather than storing and forwarding entire fiber channel arbitrated loop initialization frames, both combine to decrease the memory buffer size requirements for the fiber channel interface controller and to decrease the time required to carry out fiber channel arbitrated loop initialization. The decreased time required to carry out fiber channel arbitrated loop initialization results in less down time and increased availability of the fiber channel that are import.
