TL;DR: In this paper, a distributed system with mechanisms for automatic selection of master and slave clocks to be used for clock synchronization is presented, which includes a set of nodes (20-24) including a first node and a second node, each having a local clock (30-34) and information (40-44) pertaining to the local clock.
Abstract: A distributed system with mechanisms for automatic selection of master and slave clocks to be used for clock synchronization. The distributed system includes a set of nodes (20-24), including a first node and a second node, each having a local clock (30-34) and a set of information (40-44) pertaining to the local clock (30-34). The first node transfers a packet (50) on a communication link (12) that carries the information (52). The second node receives the packet (50) on the communication link (12) and determines whether the local clock of the second node is a master clock that synchronizes a time value in the local clock of the first node or a slave clock that synchronizes to a time value from the local clock in the first node by comparing the information (52)in the packet (50)to the information pertaining to the local clock in the second node. Automatic selection of master and slave clocks in boundary nodes (92) is provided along with mechanisms for determining clock synchronization delays and mechanisms for reporting jitter associated with communication devices (14).

TL;DR: Comparison of HPLC-Chip/TOF-MS oligosaccharides profiles revealed heterogeneity among multiple individuals with no significant variations at different stages of lactation within individual donors.
Abstract: Human milk is a complex biological fluid that provides not only primary nourishment for infants but also protection against pathogens and influences their metabolic, immunologic, and even cognitive development. The presence of oligosaccharides in remarkable abundance in human milk has been associated to provide diverse biological functions including directing the development of an infant’s intestinal microflora and immune system. Recent advances in analytical tools offer invaluable insights in understanding the specific functions and health benefits these biomolecules impart to infants. Oligosaccharides in human milk samples obtained from five different individual donors over the course of a 3 month lactation period were isolated and analyzed using HPLC-Chip/TOF-MS technology. The levels and compositions of oligosaccharides in human milk were investigated from five individual donors. Comparison of HPLC-Chip/TOF-MS oligosaccharides profiles revealed heterogeneity among multiple individuals with no signific...

TL;DR: In this article, a multi-site, cross-platform evaluation of the analytical performance of five industry-leading ctDNA assays is presented, with simulations, synthetic DNA spike-in experiments and proficiency testing on standardized, cell-line-derived reference samples.
Abstract: Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) sequencing is being rapidly adopted in precision oncology, but the accuracy, sensitivity and reproducibility of ctDNA assays is poorly understood. Here we report the findings of a multi-site, cross-platform evaluation of the analytical performance of five industry-leading ctDNA assays. We evaluated each stage of the ctDNA sequencing workflow with simulations, synthetic DNA spike-in experiments and proficiency testing on standardized, cell-line-derived reference samples. Above 0.5% variant allele frequency, ctDNA mutations were detected with high sensitivity, precision and reproducibility by all five assays, whereas, below this limit, detection became unreliable and varied widely between assays, especially when input material was limited. Missed mutations (false negatives) were more common than erroneous candidates (false positives), indicating that the reliable sampling of rare ctDNA fragments is the key challenge for ctDNA assays. This comprehensive evaluation of the analytical performance of ctDNA assays serves to inform best practice guidelines and provides a resource for precision oncology.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for fabricating a microfluidic device where first and second substantially flat platens are provided, where stencil layers are disposed between other device layers such that the channel is bounded laterally by a stencil layer and bounded from above and below by surrounding device layers to define an upper channel surface and a lower channel surface.
Abstract: A method for fabricating a microfluidic device where first and second substantially flat platens are provided. Multiple substantially planar, substantially metal-free, adhesiveless polymer device layers, the device layers including a first cover layer, second cover layer, and at least one stencil layer defining a microfluidic channel penetrating through the entire thickness of the stencil layer also are provided. Each stencil layer is disposed between other device layers such that the channel is bounded laterally by a stencil layer, and bounded from above and below by surrounding device layers to define an upper channel surface and a lower channel surface. The device layers are stacked between the first platen and the second platen. The stacked device layers are controllably heated according to a heating profile adapted to form a substantially sealed adhesiveless microfluidic device wherein each upper channel surface remains distinct from its corresponding lower channel surface. The resulting microfluidic device has high inter-layer bond strength while preserving the integrity of the channel(s) defined in the stencil layer(s).

TL;DR: In this article, an optical navigation sensor for an optical mouse includes an electronic chip, an aperture plate and an imaging lens integrated into a single package, and the imaging lens includes a lens housing surrounding the aperture and providing a barrier to the entry of foreign matter into the aperture.
Abstract: An optical navigation sensor apparatus for an optical mouse includes an optical navigation sensor having an electronic chip, an aperture plate and an imaging lens integrated into a single package. The imaging lens includes a lens housing surrounding the aperture and providing a barrier to the entry of foreign matter into the aperture. In one form, the optical navigation sensor also includes a light emitting diode (LED) for illuminating a small area of a surface under the sensor and generating a reflected image that is detected by the electronic chip. In a sensor having an integral LED, an integral collimating lens is included for receiving light from the LED and focusing the light from the LED on the surface to be illuminated. The collimating lens is incorporated into a lens housing surrounding the LED and protecting the LED from exposure to foreign material.
