TLDR
To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage and provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production.
Abstract
To understand the biology and evolution of ruminants, the cattle genome was sequenced to about sevenfold coverage. The cattle genome contains a minimum of 22,000 genes, with a core set of 14,345 orthologs shared among seven mammalian species of which 1217 are absent or undetected in noneutherian (marsupial or monotreme) genomes. Cattle-specific evolutionary breakpoint regions in chromosomes have a higher density of segmental duplications, enrichment of repetitive elements, and species-specific variations in genes associated with lactation and immune responsiveness. Genes involved in metabolism are generally highly conserved, although five metabolic genes are deleted or extensively diverged from their human orthologs. The cattle genome sequence thus provides a resource for understanding mammalian evolution and accelerating livestock genetic improvement for milk and meat production.

Reduced representation bisulphite sequencing of ten bovine somatic tissues reveals DNA methylation patterns and their impacts on gene expression.

TL;DR: This study provides a baseline dataset and essential information for DNA methylation profiles of cattle and reveals many DMCs (including non-CGs) and DMIs, which were highly correlated with the expression of genes involved in tissue development.

Novel functional sequences uncovered through a bovine multi-assembly graph

TL;DR: In this article, a multi-assembly graph from six reference-quality assemblies from taurine cattle and their close relatives was built to uncover 70,329,827 bases that are missing in the bovine linear reference genome.

Karyomapping for simultaneous genomic evaluation and aneuploidy screening of preimplantation bovine embryos: The first live-born calves.

TL;DR: This approach has the potential to simultaneously improve pregnancy rates following embryo transfer and the rate of genetic gain in cattle breeding, and is applicable to basic research to investigate meiosis and aneuploidy.

Comparative analyses of sperm DNA methylomes among human, mouse and cattle provide insights into epigenomic evolution and complex traits.

TL;DR: Comparing sperm DNA methylomes and large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) signals between human and cattle aimed at examining the DNA methylome evolution and its associations with complex phenotypes in mammals demonstrated important roles of epigenome evolution in shaping the genetic architecture underlyingcomplex phenotypes.

The bovine T cell receptor alpha/delta locus contains over 400 V genes and encodes V genes without CDR2.

TL;DR: A map of the bovine TRA/TRD locus is created and it is shown that, in cattle, in addition to the anticipated >100 TRDV genes, there are also >300 TRAV or TRAV/ DV genes.

FcRn: the neonatal Fc receptor comes of age

TL;DR: The neonatal Fc receptor for IgG (FcRn) has been well characterized in the transfer of passive humoral immunity from a mother to her fetus and throughout life, FcRm protects IgG from degradation, thereby explaining the long half-life of this class of antibody in the serum.
