Occurrence and Epidemiology of Fannia Spp. (Diptera: Fanniidae) in Laying Poultry Farms in State of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: Aspects related to epidemiology of flies belonging to Fannia genus were studied in order to determine predisposing factors for its occurrence in layer hens houses of commercial farms in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. An observational, analytical and sectional survey was conducted to verify major epidemiological aspects associated to infestations. This research was accomplished starting from an adapted secondary database of and structured with information on the presence and absence of ectoparasites and arthropods, characteristics of chicken houses, the poultry, type of facilities, geographical location and the management. The study was conducted in four hundred and thirty one houses located in forty three farms visited in 2012 year in the state of Minas Gerais. Ten farms (23.25%) and sixty eight houses (15,77%) were observed the presence diptera belonging to Fannia genus. The specie Fannia admirabilis was found in four farms (9,30%), Fannia albitarsis in two farms (4,65%) and only in one farm (2.32%) was observed the presence of Fannia canicularis. For three farms 6,98% was no possible to identify the species only Fannia genus. The epidemiological aspects for the occurrence of these flies were investigated using Poisson regression models. Characteristics such as farm, city of farm, presence of Histeridae beetles, type of facility (cage, on the floor with or without bedding) and the existence of mechanical removal of manure were associated with the occurrence of Fannia spp.

Evaluation of lipid removal from animal fats for the determination of organochlorine, pesticides, and polychlorinated biphenyl indicators by gas chromatography with electron capture detector

Abstract: For cleanup of animal fat before GC analysis of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls, freezing-lipid filtration with solid-phase extraction and matrix solid-phase dispersion were evaluated to replace the official Brazilian methodology that uses preparative alumina column chromatography. General drawbacks associated with this last technique, such as the use of large amounts of solvent, laborious and time-consuming procedure could be avoided by using these alternative approaches. Experiments were carried out to study the performance by using different combinations of sorbents and elution solvents. Efficiency of alternative extraction methods in terms of fat removal and recovery capability was monitored by gravimetry, TLC, and GC with electron capture detection. Freezing-lipid filtration with solid-phase extraction afforded better clean up efficiency with recoveries in a range of 54.5 to 103.6% with the relative standard deviation of less than 10% for all compounds under investigation.

Evidence for current circulation of an ancient West Nile virus strain (NY99) in Brazil

Abstract: Introduction In Brazil, West Nile virus (WNV) was first detected in 2018 from horses with neurological disease. Aim Here we present the first reported case in Ceara state and complete genome sequence from an isolated in Espirito Santo state from 2019. Methods The virus was isolated from a horse that died with neurological signs in Espirito Santo and was sequenced by MiSeq. Results Phylogenetic analysis reveals that this isolate belongs to lineage 1a, clustering with NY99 strain, that disappeared from the USA since 2005. Conclusions Our findings reinforce the hypothesis that WNV has been silently circulating in Brazil for many years.

IDENTIFICAÇÃO DE SUBSTRATO ADEQUADO PARA GERMINAÇÃO DE SEMENTES DE Allophylus edulis (A. St.-Hil., A. Juss. & Cambess.) Radlk.

Abstract: Este trabalho objetivou identificar a melhor metodologia que expressasse a germinacao e a qualidade das sementes de Allophylus edulis, analisando diferentes substratos. Inicialmente, realizou-se a caracterizacao do lote atraves de Peso de Mil Sementes (PMS), Teor de Agua (TA) e Condutividade Eletrica (CE). No Teste de Germinacao foram avaliados os seguintes tratamentos (substratos): sobre papel mata-borao (PMB), sobre papel filtro (SPF), sobre (SA) e entre areia (EA), sobre (SV) e entre vermiculita (EV) e rolo de papel (RP), sendo conduzidos em câmara de germinacao Mangelsdorf (25 °C). Os dados foram expressos em percentagem de plântulas normais, anormais, sementes mortas e firmes e ainda, avaliado o indice de velocidade de germinacao. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repeticoes por tratamento. Os substratos sobre areia (SA) e entre vermiculita (EV) foram os mais adequados para o teste de germinacao, sendo que a primeira contagem de plântulas normais pode ser feita entre 12 e 15 dias e a final aos 24 dias apos a semeadura
