TL;DR: There is a need to conduct long-term randomized controlled trials of elderly patients with CKD in order to identify the most effective therapeutic procedures for the control of this disease.
Abstract: Population aging, along with the increasing incidence of chronic diseases, has contributed to a global rise in the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this study was to perform an integrative review of proposed treatments for elderly patients with non-dialysis phase CKD. A literature search was performed of studies written from January 2002 to May 2013, registered on the MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO and Science Direct electronic databases, using the keywords: chronic kidney disease, treatment and elderly. Complete, freely available articles were included. Initially, 215 items were identified. After the eligibility phase, 13 articles were included in this integrative review. The therapeutic interventions recommended for the management of CKD include the control of hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia, changes to diet, weight reduction and abstinence from smoking. In terms of treatment, for many older people with CKD, an individualized patient-centered approach may be more effective than the traditional disease-oriented strategy. Referral to a nephrologist appears to be a beneficial procedure for the management of renal disease. While there was an apparent effort by researchers to institute more effective therapeutic approaches, there was little evidence of interventions that might improve survival rates of elderly patients with CKD. However, some interventions prevent exacerbation of the disease, and delay the progression of CKD. There is therefore a need to conduct long-term randomized controlled trials of elderly patients with CKD in order to identify the most effective therapeutic procedures for the control of this disease.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the impact of watching TV on global cognitive function, immediate memory, verbal fluency, risk of dementia of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) in a cohort of older adults residents of socioeconomically deprived areas of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Abstract: Watching TV is a highly prevalent leisure activity among older adults and, in many cases, the only leisure option of those living in low-income communities. While engaging in leisure activities have proven to protect older adults from cognitive decline, the effects of watching TV on cognition of this population is controversial in the literature. This study investigated the impact of watching TV on global cognitive function, immediate memory, verbal fluency, risk of dementia of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) in a cohort of older adults residents of socioeconomically deprived areas of Sao Paulo, Brazil. We used data from the Sao Paulo Aging & Health Study (SPAH). Participants aged 65 years or over, with no dementia diagnosis at baseline and who completed the 2-year follow-up assessment were included in this study (n = 1,243). Multivariable linear regression models were performed to assess the effect of watching TV on global cognitive function, immediate memory and verbal fluency. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate the risk of developing dementia and aMCI. Models were controlled by cognitive performance at baseline, sociodemographic characteristics and functional status. Cognitive performance at baseline and follow-up were similar. Thirty-one participants were diagnosed with dementia, and 23 with aMCI 24 months after inclusion in the study. Watching TV did not show any positive or negative effect on global cognitive function, immediate memory, verbal fluency, risk of dementia and risk of aMCI. It is good news that watching TV did not predict the decline in cognition in elders. However, it is essential to increase opportunities for other leisure activities for low-income and low-educated older adults if we do consider that leisure activities protect cognition decline in older adults. In the coming decades, developing countries will experience the highest burden of dementia and more than fun, public policies to promote leisure activities might be a strategy to alleviate this burden shortly.

TL;DR: Results showed differences in density, dominance of taxa, and richness among taxonomic groups of the associated fauna were related to algal morphology and circulation patterns, particularly in the community under the most intense flow.
Abstract: There are important gaps to understand the composition of the fauna associated with macroalgae, such as, how distinct algal morphology and environmental features, like turbulence or circulation patterns, may affect the distribution of them. In this study, macroalgae and associated fauna samples were undertaken between 4 and 12-m depth at three sites within the Admiralty Bay, King George Island, during the austral summer of 2000/2001. Previous physical oceanography data from the bay showed that each of these sites featured different circulation regimes. Differences and similarities in composition and density of the fauna associated with five species of macroalgae with different morphologies were analyzed: foliose (Monostroma hariotii and Palmaria decipiens); mixed (Myriogramme mangini); and branched (Desmarestia menziesii and Phaeurus antarcticus). Results showed differences in density, dominance of taxa, and richness among taxonomic groups of the associated fauna were related to algal morphology and circulation patterns. The dominance of epifaunal groups among macroalgae (e.g., D. menziesii, M. hariotii, and M. mangini) showed an adaptive response to different water flow settings within the bay, particularly in the community under the most intense flow. Further studies on associated fauna, should consider other environmental physical features and take our study like baseline to understand how major processes (e.g., climate change, seawater properties and circulation) may affect the communities, especially in more vulnerable shallow water zones.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the perceptual aspect of body image (body size estimation) and its possible association with the motor aspect involved in the practice of dance, comparing contemporary dancers with physically active and inactive individuals.
Abstract: Dancers use multiple forms of body language when performing their functions in the contemporary dance scene. Some neurocognitive aspects are involved in dance, and we highlight the aspect of body image, in particular, the dimensional aspect of the body perception. The aim of this study is to analyze the perceptual aspect of body image (body size estimation) and its possible association with the motor aspect (dynamic balance) involved in the practice of dance, comparing contemporary dancers with physically active and inactive individuals. The sample consisted of 48 subjects divided into four groups: 1) Professional Group (PG); 2) Dance Student Group (SG); 3) Physically Active Group (AG); and 4) Physically Inactive Group (IG).Two tests were used: the Image Marking Procedure (body size estimation) and the Star Excursion Balance Test (dynamic balance). Was observed that dancing and exercising contribute to a proper body size estimation, but cannot be considered the only determining factor. Although dancers have higher ability in the motor test (dynamic balance), no direct relation to the perception of body size was observed, leading us to conclude it is a skill task/dependent acquired by repeating and training. In this study, we found a statistical significant association between educational level and body size estimation. The study opens new horizons in relation to the understanding of factors involved in the construction of the body size estimation.
