Abstract: A presence detection system is equipped with a transmitter that transmits a multipath wireless signal and a receiver that detects the presence of a person by receiving the transmitted wireless signal, within a prescribed space. On the basis of the reception level for a wireless signal received intermittently at the beginning of a first interval, the receiver determines whether there has been a change in the present/absent state of a person. When it is determined that there has been a change in the present/absent state of a person, the receiver determines whether a person is present/absent on the basis of variation in the reception level for a wireless signal received at the beginning of a second interval, which is shorter than the first interval.

Abstract: An engine starting device includes a drainage member which is attached to an attachment hole provided in a machine casing of the device and drains water intruded in the device. The drainage member includes: a torso section; a neck section; a flange section and a claw section, which are integrally configured with the neck section, and in which when the neck section is fitted in the hole, the flange section comes in contact with the inside of the casing and the claw section comes in contact with the outside of the casing, at least one section of the claw section being formed on the outside of the torso section; and partition plates separated in parallel so as to be capable of being overlapped each other and easily deformed when the claw section is pressed from the outside to the inner periphery of the torso section at the claw section.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for determining a direction in which a subject's head is facing. The present invention has particular relevance to monitoring driver conditions in automobiles. By monitoring head positions and motions, the system can estimate driver awareness. Signals or alarms can be activated if the driver does not appear to be aware of driving conditions. The present invention provides a rapid, low cost device for determining pose position, which would be useful in automobiles. A large number of images of various subjects in different poses are stored a memory. The poses are then organized according to tree-structured vector quantization to allow comparison with a sample image of an actual driver. The tree structure is traversed to find a leaf node constituting one of the stored images which is closest to the sample image. The pose of the closest image is outputted as the pose of the sample image. Cropping can be done automatically by including, within the stored images, extra examples which are offset from center. If the closest pose is one that is offset, the cropping window for subsequent sample images is appropriately adjusted in order to maintain the head of the subject close to the center of the cropping window.

Abstract: A base station receives a signal transmitted from a mobile station, estimates the state of the radio uplink, and receives state information indicating the state of the radio downlink measured by the mobile station. When the uplink quality and the downlink quality satisfy scheduling grant conditions set up in advance, the base station is allowed to carry out scheduling for the mobile station. In contrast, the base station is not allowed to carry out the scheduling for any terminal in which a link imbalance has occurred. Therefore, the throughput of the whole system increases.
