Abstract: Lignin peroxidase from the liquid culture filtrate of Gloeophyllum sepiarium MTCC-1170 has been purified to homogeneity. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was 42 kDa as determined by SDS-PAGE. The K(m) values were 54 and 76 microM for veratryl alcohol and H2O2, respectively. The pH and temperature optima were 2.5 and 25 degrees C, respectively. Depolymerization of coal by the fungal strain has been demonstrated using humic acid as a model of coal. Depolymerization of humic acid by the purified lignin peroxidase has been shown by the decrease in absorbance at 450 nm and increase in absorbance at 360 nm in presence of H2O2. Depolymerization of humic acid by the purified enzyme has also been demonstrated by the decrease in the viscosity with time of the reaction solution containing humic acid, H2O2, and the purified lignin peroxidase. The influence of NaCl and NaN3 and inhibitory effects of various metal chelating agents on the lignin peroxidase activity were studied.

Abstract: We present an extensive study of 72 archival Chandra light curves of the high-frequency-peaked type blazar Mrk 421, the first strong extragalactic object to be detected at TeV energies. Between 2000 and 2015 Mrk 421 often displayed intraday variability in the 0.3-10.0 keV energy range, as quantified through fractional variability amplitudes that range up to 21.3 per cent. A variability duty cycle of ~84 per cent is present in these data. Variability timescales, with values ranging from 5.5 to 30.5 ks, appear to be present in seven of these observations. Discrete correlation function analyses show positive correlations between the soft (0.3-2.0 keV) and hard (2.0-10.0 keV) X-ray energy bands with zero time lags, indicating that very similar electron populations are responsible for the emission of all the X-rays observed by Chandra. The hardness ratios of this X-ray emission indicate a general "harder-when-brighter" trend in the spectral behaviour of Mrk 421. Spectral index-flux plots provide model independent indications of the spectral evolution of the source and information on the X-ray emission mechanisms. Brief discussions of theoretical models that are consistent with these observations are given.

Abstract: On screening the leaf extracts of some higher plants for their volatile antifungal activity against the test organism Aspergillus flavus, the extract of Ocimum adscendens exhibited the strongest fungitoxicity. The leaves showed maximum, fungitoxicity as compared with other plant parts. The volatile fungitoxic fraction obtained as an essential oil was standardized by various physico-chemical properties. The oil showed its fungicidal nature and broad range of activity at its minimum inhibitory concentration. The oil was thermostable and the toxicity remained unchanged even on autoclaving and on storage for up to 360 days. Moreover, the oil proved more active than some prevalent synthetic fungicides and exhibited no phytotoxic effect onVigna radiata.

Abstract: Nanocrystals of NiO and ZnO were prepared by a novel refluxing method and characterized by XRD and TEM. The average particles size of NiO and ZnO were found to be 6 and 31 nm, respectively, from the XRD patterns. These Transition Metal Oxide Nanocrystals (TMONs) were found to catalyze the thermal decomposition of 5-nitro-1, 2, 4-triazol-3-one (NTO). Between the two TMOs, ZnO was found to have better catalytic activity than NiO. Kinetic parameters for the isothermal decomposition of NTO in presence and absence of these metal oxides were obtained using a model-free isoconversional method. The activation energy for NTO, NTO+1 %NiO, and NTO+1 %ZnO was found to be 60.1, 52.1, and 47.9 kJ mol−1 and a similar order was found from the explosion studies (36.1, 31.6, and 27.4 kJ mol−1, respectively).

Abstract: Effects of sublethal treatment (20 and 60% of LC50/24 h) of the plant-derived molluscicides Annona squamosa Linn. and Lawsonia inermis Linn. and their combinations with other herbal molluscicides, such as Cedrus deodara Roxb, Azadirachta indica A. Juss, bulb powder of Allium sativum Linn. and Polianthes tuberosa Linn., and oleoresin of Zingiber officinale Rosc., and acetogenins extracted from the seeds of A. squamosa Linn., on the reproduction of the snail Lymnaea acuminata have been studied. It was observed that the plant-derived molluscicides singly and in binary combinations with other herbal molluscicides and the extracted acetogenins caused a significant reduction in the fecundity, hatchability, and survival of young snails. Withdrawal of the snails to fresh water after the above treatment caused a significant recovery in the fecundity of the snail Lymnaea acuminata. Twenty-four-hour sublethal treatment with the acetogenins caused a maximum reduction in the protein, amino acid, DNA, and RNA in the ovotestis of treated Lymnaea acuminata.
