Abstract: GC–MS analysis of fresh rhizome essential oil of Zingiber officinale showed the presence of 69 components, accounting for 96.93% of the total oil. The major component was α-zingiberene (28.62%) followed by camphene (9.32%), ar-curcumene (9.09%) and β-phellandrene (7.97%). Analysis of the oleoresin showed the presence of 34 components, accounting for 88.63% of the total oleoresin. The major components were trans-6-shogaol (26.23%), trans-10-shogaol (13.0%), α-zingiberene (9.66%) and 10-gingerdione (6.80%). Moreover, the essential oil was found to be 100% antifungal against Fusarium oxysporum, whereas the oleoresin was 100% antifungal against Aspergillus niger. The latter expressed better antioxidant activity in sunflower oil as compared to the essential oil and synthetic antioxidants (BHA and BHT). Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: GC and GC-MS analysis of volatile oil obtained from Piper nigrum L resulted in the identification of 49 components accounting for 99.39% of the total amount, and the major components were β-caryophyllene (24.24%), limonene (16.88%), sabinene (13.01%), β-bisabolene (7.69%) and α-copaene (6.3%). The acetone extract of pepper showed the presence of 18 components accounting for 75.59% of the total amount. Piperine (33.53%), piperolein B (13.73%), piperamide (3.43%) and guineensine (3.23%) were the major components. The oil was found to be 100% effective in controlling the mycelial growth of Fusarium graminearum in inverted petriplate technique. The acetone extract retarded 100% mycelial growth of Penicillium viridcatum and Aspergillus ochraceus in food-poisoning technique. Volatile oil and acetone extract were identified as a better antioxidant for linseed oil, in comparison with butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Abstract: The Dof (DNA binding with One Finger) family represents a classic zinc-finger transcription factors involved with multifarious roles exclusively in plants. There exists great diversity in terms of number of Dof genes observed in different crops. In current study, a total of 28 putative Dof genes have been predicted in silico from the recently available whole genome shotgun sequence of Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (with assigned accession numbers TPA:BK006983–BK007006 and TPA:BK007079–BK007082). The predicted SbDof genes are distributed on nine out of ten chromosomes of sorghum and most of these genes lack introns based on canonical intron/exon structure. Phylogenetic analysis of 28 SbDof proteins resulted in four subgroups constituting six clusters. The comparative phylogenetic analysis of these Dof proteins along with 30 rice and 36 Arabidopsis Dof proteins revealed six major groups similar to what has been observed earlier for rice and Arabidopsis. Motif analysis revealed the presence of conserved 50–52 amino acids Dof domain uniformly distributed across all the 28 Dof proteins of sorghum. The in silico cis-regulatory elements analysis of these SbDof genes suggested its diverse functions associated with light responsiveness, endosperm specific gene expression, hormone responsiveness, meristem specific expression and stress responsiveness.

Abstract: Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a bulbous herb used as a food item, spice and medicine in different parts of the world. Its medicinal use is based on traditional experience passed from generation to generation. Researchers from various disciplines are now directing their efforts towards discovering the effects of garlic on human health. Interest in garlic among researchers, particularly those in medical profession, has stemmed from the search for a drug that has a broad-spectrum therapeutic effect with minimal toxicity. Recent studies indicate that garlic extract has antimicrobial activity against many genera of bacteria, fungi and viruses. The role of garlic in preventing cardiovascular disease has been acclaimed by several authors. Chemical constituents of garlic have been investigated for treatment of hyperlipidemia, hypertension, platelet aggregation and blood fibrinolytic activity. Experimental data indicate that garlic may have anticarcinogenic effect. Recent researches in the area of pest control show that garlic has strong insecticidal, nematicidal, rodenticidal and molluscicidal activity. Despite field trials and laboratory experiments on the pesticidal activity of garlic have been conducted, more studies on the way of delivery in environment and mode of action are still recommended for effective control of pest. Adverse effects of oral ingestion and topical exposure of garlic include body odor, allergic reactions, acceleration in the effects of anticoagulants and reduction in the efficacy of anti-AIDS drug Saquinavir

Abstract: Similarity solutions are obtained for unsteady, one-dimensional self-similar flow behind a strong shock wave, driven by a moving piston, in a dusty gas. The dusty gas is assumed to consist of a mixture of small solid particles and a non-ideal gas, in which solid particles are continuously distributed. It is assumed that the equilibrium flow-condition is maintained and variable energy input is continuously supplied by the piston. Solutions are obtained under both the isothermal and adiabatic conditions of the flow-field. The spherical case is worked out in detail to investigate to what extent the flow-field behind the shock is influenced by the non-idealness of the gas in the mixture as well as by the mass concentration of the solid particles, by the ratio of density of the solid particles to the initial density of the mixture and by the energy input due to moving piston. A comparison is also made between isothermal and adiabatic cases.
