Abstract: This paper presents a novel background subtraction method for detecting foreground objects in dynamic scenes involving swaying trees and fluttering flags. Most methods proposed so far adjust the permissible range of the background image variations according to the training samples of background images. Thus, the detection sensitivity decreases at those pixels having wide permissible ranges. If we can narrow the ranges by analyzing input images, the detection sensitivity can be improved. For this narrowing, we employ the property that image variations at neighboring image blocks have strong correlation, also known as "cooccurrence". This approach is essentially different from chronological background image updating or morphological postprocessing. Experimental results for real images demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract: There are numerous applications which require packets to be delivered within pre-specified delay bounds in point-to-point packet-switched networks. To meet this requirement, we define a real-time channel as a unidirectional connection between two nodes in such a network that guarantees every packet to be delivered before a user-defined, end-to-end deadline. The goal of this paper is to lay a mathematical basis for the problem of establishing real-time channels by (i) deriving a necessary and sufficient condition for the schedulability of a set of channels over a link, and (ii) developing an efficient method for calculating the minimum delay bound over a link for each channel. Given the traffic characteristics of a channel, our results can be used to check whether or not every packet will be delivered within a pre-specified delay bound. The results are also applicable to a wide variety of real-time task scheduling problems. >

Abstract: Mcm proteins play an essential role in eukaryotic DNA replication, but their biochemical functions are poorly understood. Recently, we reported that a DNA helicase activity is associated with an Mcm4-Mcm6-Mcm7 (Mcm4,6,7) complex, suggesting that this complex is involved in the initiation of DNA replication as a DNA-unwinding enzyme. In this study, we have expressed and isolated the mouse Mcm2,4,6,7 proteins from insect cells and characterized various mutant Mcm4,6,7 complexes in which the conserved ATPase motifs of the Mcm4 and Mcm6 proteins were mutated. The activities associated with such preparations demonstrated that the DNA helicase activity is intrinsically associated with the Mcm4,6,7 complex. Biochemical analyses of these mutant Mcm4,6,7 complexes indicated that the ATP binding activity of the Mcm6 protein in the complex is critical for DNA helicase activity and that the Mcm4 protein may play a role in the single-stranded DNA binding activity of the complex. The results also indicated that the two activities of DNA helicase and single-stranded DNA binding can be separated.

Abstract: Elucidating the function of all predicted genes in rice remains as the ultimate goal in cereal genomics in order to ensure the development of improved varieties that will sustain an expanding world population. We constructed a gene expression database (RiceXPro, URL: http://ricexpro.dna.affrc.go.jp/) to provide an overview of the transcriptional changes throughout the growth of the rice plant in the field. RiceXPro contains two data sets corresponding to spatiotemporal gene expression profiles of various organs and tissues, and continuous gene expression profiles of leaf from transplanting to harvesting. A user-friendly web interface enables the extraction of specific gene expression profiles by keyword and chromosome search, and basic data analysis, thereby providing useful information as to the organ/tissue and developmental stage specificity of expression of a particular gene. Analysis tools such as t-test, calculation of fold change and degree of correlation facilitate the comparison of expression profiles between two random samples and the prediction of function of uncharacterized genes. As a repository of expression data encompassing growth in the field, this database can provide baseline information of genes that underlie various agronomically important traits in rice.
