TL;DR: In this article, a system comprising a neural network, or computer, implementing a feature detection and a statistical procedure, together with fuzzy logic for solving the problem of recognition of faces or other objects at multiple resolutions is described.
Abstract: A system comprising a neural network, or computer, implementing a feature detection and a statistical procedure, together with fuzzy logic for solving the problem of recognition of faces or other objects) at multiple resolutions is described. A plurality of previously described systems for recognizing faces (or other objects) which use local autocorrelation coefficients and linear discriminant analysis are trained on a data set to recognize facial images each at a particular resolution. In a second training stage, each of the previously described systems is tested on a second training set in which the images presented to the previously described recognition systems have a matching resolution to those of the first training set, the statistical performance of this second training stage being used to train a fuzzy combination technique, that of fuzzy integrals. Finally, in a test stage, the results from the classifiers at the multiple resolutions are combined using fuzzy combination to produce an aggregated system whose performance is higher than that of any of the individual systems and shows very good performance relative to all known face recognitior systems which operate on similar types of training and testing data, this aggregated system, however, not being limited to the recognition of faces and being able to be applied to the recognition of other objects.

TL;DR: In this paper, an operating method for a hybrid vehicle which has an electric motor for driving the vehicle and an internal combustion engine for power generation is presented, where the engine is operated in warm-up mode with a small throttle valve opening.
Abstract: An operating method for a hybrid vehicle which has an electric motor for driving the vehicle and an internal combustion engine for power generation. Upon completion of the activation of a catalyst, the engine is operated in warm-up mode with a small throttle valve opening, and when the output of a water temperature gauge thereafter reaches a predetermined value and the warm-up operation has completed, the engine is operated with a large throttle valve opening for the power generation. Thus, the hybrid vehicle can enjoy improved exhaust gas characteristics and increased cruising range and power performances. If it is determined that the storage amount of a battery is smaller than a predetermined storage amount when a starter key is so operated as to stop the vehicle, an alarm lamp is lighted, thus informing the driver of engine operation, and the engine operation is continued until the predetermined battery storage amount is reached or a predetermine time elapses from the start of the engine operation, whereby the battery is reliably charged. Accordingly, the battery can be reliably charged with power necessary to start the vehicle, and the cruising range and power performances of the vehicle are improved.

TL;DR: In this article, a hair cosmetic composition consisting of graft copolymer and/or an alternating block copolym, each of which comprises a first unit containing polysiloxane group and a second unit containing a polymer of unsaturated monomers is provided.
Abstract: A hair cosmetic composition containing a graft copolymer and/or an alternating block copolymer, each of which comprises a first unit containing a polysiloxane group and a second unit containing a polymer of unsaturated monomers is provided. The first and second units are linked by sulfide linkage. The hair cosmetic composition provides hair with softness, luster, combing smoothness, styling ease, enhanced volume, and has good hairstyle retainability and damage-restoring characteristics.

TL;DR: A 100-MHz two-dimensional discrete cosine transform core processor applicable to the real-time processing of HDTV signals is described, which features the fastest operating speed and the smallest area with sufficient accuracy to satisfy the specifications in CCITT recommendation H.261.
Abstract: A 100-MHz two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (DCT) core processor applicable to the real-time processing of HDTV signals is described. An excellent architecture utilizing a fast DCT algorithm and multiplier accumulators based on distributed arithmetic have contributed to reducing the hardware amount and to enhancing the speed performance. A layout scheme with a column-interleaved memory and a new ROM circuit are introduced for the efficient implementation of memory-based signal processing circuits. Furthermore, mean values of errors generated in the core were minimized to enhance the computational accuracy with the word-length constraints. Consequently, it features the fastest operating speed and the smallest area with sufficient accuracy to satisfy the specifications in CCITT recommendation H.261. The core integrates about 102 K transistors and occupies 21 mm/sup 2/ using 0.8- mu m double-metal CMOS technology. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a modified A-method was used to calculate 3D eddy current using edge elements in the 20-node isoparametric elements, and the test problems of a square plate and a hollow sphere were solved with linear 12-edge and quadratic 36-edge elements, respectively.
Abstract: The calculation of transient 3-D eddy current using edge elements in the modified A-method is presented. Quadratic 36-edge elements on the 20-node isoparametric elements are proposed. Specifically, the test problems of a square plate and a hollow sphere are solved with linear 12-edge and quadratic 36-edge elements, and the results are compared with the analytical solutions. The results using the two types of elements agree well with each other and with the analytical solution, demonstrating the applicability of these elements for eddy-current calculation. The spatial distributions of the current and magnetic field in elements interpolated by shape functions are approximated better by quadratic elements with fewer degrees of freedom than the linear elements. The accuracy of both types of elements is nearly the same in the test problem of a hollow sphere if the size of the quadratic elements is double that of the linear elements. >
