In this paper, I will show that an account based on the idea of Phrasal Spell-out can elegantly account for some puzzles regarding VN compounds in Romance languages, interpreted here as 'lexicalized modifying clauses'. I advance the hypothesis of a rebooting mechanism in extended projections as an alternative to the postulation of silent items to account for the ambiguous nature of VN words that can appear either as noun or adjectives/adverbials. With such an approach no compounding rules are involved and we do not need to resort to categorial underspecification to account for the ‘VN facts’.

I will here sketch out, using a basic intuitive model, the contours of a theory of the elementary content of animal and human consciousness. This model targets consciousness as it evolved from mammals to primates to Cro-Magnons, and develops accounts of content structure in basic consciousness from simple being-awake to higher and more specifically human notions of self and reflexivity. It postulates a primordial, grounding narrative structure and suggests a gradual complexification through increasing supply from memory and empathie information from other subjects. The complex result offers an architecture of canonical levels of consciousness and self; this tentative stratification spans from constitutive semiotic structures to aesthetic and linguistic forms of 'being conscious'. Five such strata are described; somewhere midway Cro-Magnons are abandoned by other species, primates or mammals, however domesticated or trained.

On Consciousness and Semiosis

A la difference de la semiotique du signe, extension de la tradition logico-grammaticale, le programme saussurien d'une « science des signes au sein de la vie sociale » conduit a privilegier les textes et autres performances semiotiques complexes, comme a les contextualiser au sein des pratiques de production et d'interpretation ou ils prennent sens. Cela permet d'esquisser un programme federateur pour les sciences de la culture : il developpe l'anthropologie qui a donne naissance chez Humbolt a la linguistique historique et comparee. Apres avoir interroge le statut scientifique de la semiotique, on souligne qu'une semantique des textes peut contribuer a renouveler sa problematique. La linguistique est en effet la semiotique des langues, et releve en cela d'une semiotique des cultures.

Sémiotique et sciences de la culture

Le but de cette these est de construire un fragment de grammaire du francais rendant compte de la syntaxe de l'infinitif dans le cadre des grammaires d'arbres polychromes (GAP). La these se compose de deux parties. La premiere concerne l'etude des problemes que pose l'infinitif. L'infinitif, comme un verbe, a des complements et le constituant qu'il forme avec ses complements peut etre lui aussi un complement d'un verbe, d'un nom, d'un adjectif. Ce que les grammaires traditionnelles traduisent en parlant d'une double nature : il possede a la fois des proprietes nominales et verbales. D'ou une difficulte specifique pour faire entrer la syntaxe de l'infinitif dans un modele formel qui puisse se preter au traitement automatique. Nous appelons constituant infinitif l'unite composee d'un verbe infinitif et de ses complements. Il est explique pourquoi ce terme est prefere a celui de « proposition subordonnee infinitive ». La seconde partie aborde l'analyse syntaxique des constituants infinitifs en GAP et s'organise autour des contextes dans lesquels apparait l'infinitif (un verbe, un nom, un adjectif). Le choix d'une representation en GAP permet de mettre a l'epreuve ce formalisme et de montrer l'interet qu'il y a de separer les fonctions syntaxiques des categories. Ainsi peut-on rendre compte des cas ou un constituant d'une categorie non nominale occupe une position en general occupee par un nom. Ce travail aura permis, en s'interessant a la question de la syntaxe de l'infinitif, en partant d'une reinterrogation de certaines etudes en provenance des grammaires traditionnelles, de parvenir a l'enrichissement d'un formalisme elabore dans la perspective du TAL.
