Reticent romans: silence and writing in La Vie de Saint Alexis, Le Conte du Graal, and Le Roman de Silence

This article explains the correlation between agreeing and nonagreeing forms of pronominal possessors and their person features in Romanian and other Indo-European languages: first- and second-person pronouns agree, whereas third-person pronouns are nonagreeing forms marked with genitive case. We show that the distribution of agreeing and nonagreeing pronominal forms follows from a constraint of feature uniqueness , which prevents a pronominal root from merging with more than one set of inflectional features (distinguished from lexical features, which belong to the root). The analysis is shown to extend to the agreeing third-person possessors found in most Romance and Germanic languages and to the Slavic agreeing nominal possessors.

Pronominal Possessors and Feature Uniqueness

Starting from the theories of leading psychiatrists, like Kraepelin and de Clerambault, the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan (1901-1981) formulated an original theory of psychosis, focusing on the subject and on the structuring role of language In particular, he postulated that language makes up the experience of subjectivity and that psychosis is marked by the absence of a crucial metaphorization process Interestingly, in contemporary psychiatry there is growing empirical evidence that schizophrenia is characterized by abnormal interpretation of verbal and non-verbal information, with a great difficulty to put such information in the appropriate context Neuro-scientific contributions have investigated this difficulty suggesting the possibility of interpreting schizophrenia as a semiotic disorder which makes the patients incapable of understanding the figurative meaning of the metaphoric speech, probably due to a dysfunction of certain right hemisphere areas, such as the right temporoparietal junction and the right superior/middle temporal gyrus In this paper we first review the Lacanian theory of psychosis and neuro-scientific research in the field of symbolization and metaphoric speech Next, we discuss possible convergences between both approaches, exploring how they might join and inspire one another Clinical and neurophysiological research implications are discussed

Tous les travaux notent la proximite entre la representation du temps et celle de l'espace, quelle que soit la langue consideree Dans une perspective comparative, portant a la fois sur des langues indo-europeennes — francais, anglais, langues slaves — et non indo-europeennes — arabe, swahili, louo, kikuyu, japonais —, le but de la presente these est d'examiner l'hypothese selon laquelle la proximite entre la representation linguistique de l'espace et celle du temps correspond a une proximite entre les representations cognitives de l'espace et du temps Nous partirons de l'hypothese selon laquelle la representation de l'espace precede et determine au moins partiellement celle du temps, sur la base d'abstractions cognitives communes A partir d'un corpus large tire de textes litteraires et portant sur les prepositions du francais, nous proposerons une semantique pour ces prepositions sur la base de l'ontologie spatiale de Casati et Varzi, semantique que nous confronterons ensuite aux donnees de l'anglais, des langues slaves, du swahili, du louo, du kikuyu, du japonais et de l'arabe Notre conclusion est que l'hypothese selon laquelle la cognition de l'espace precede et conditionne celle du temps explique egalement la proximite entre leurs representations linguistiques
