RESUMEN. Este articulo se basa en la nocion de metadiscurso, la cual, segun Crismore et al. (1993) se refiere al material linguistico de los textos, ya sean hablados o escritos, que no anade nada al contenido proposicional pero esta destinado a ayudar al lector/a u oyente para que este la organice, interprete y evalue la informacion dada. Tanto los matizadores discursivos (hedges) en los articulos de investigacion como los elementos apelativos y faticos en los articulos de divulgacion son las dos caras de esta moneda, es decir, del metadiscurso, pero tambien constituyen lo que Halliday (1978) denomina tenor y modo, dentro del concepto de registro. Partiendo de esta teorizacion, analizo ambos fenomenos linguisticos ‐matizadores y elementos apelativos y faticos‐ en un corpus piloto de articulos cientificos de investigacion y de divulgacion en ingles. El objetivo es el de describir el metadiscurso que ambos fenomenos presentan y ver si existe algun tipo de homogeneidad en el mismo, tanto de forma comparada entre ambos generos como internamente entre articulos pertenecientes al mismo genero. Las implicaciones pueden ser utiles para la traduccion y para la ensenanza de ambos generos discursivos. Abstract In a number of recent works, verbs and expressions encoding causative alternations have been regarded as a possible test for measuring the basic valency orientation of a language. This paper focuses on the basic orientation of valency in Homeric Greek. The test applied for determining this parameter is that proposed by Nichols et al. (2004, Transitivizing and detransitivizing languages. Linguistic Typology 8(2). 149–211), focusing on 18 causative alternations. The investigation carried out in this paper shows that Homeric Greek belongs to the detransitivizing type, showing an active-middle alternation as the preferred pattern for expressing causative alternations. This study aims to enrich the typological literature on this topic and positions itself among other studies of valency orientation in ancient Indo-European languages, such as Old Hittite, Old Indo-Aryan, Proto-Germanic, and Proto-Slavic, which show transitivizing strategies along with voice alternation patterns.

Basic valency orientation in Homeric Greek

To be or not to be green is no longer a question for business communities. The necessity to reduce the environmental impact of various products and production methods is an unquestionable responsibility of the contemporary business world. The challenging question is: how is business greening communicated? This paper explores how environmental knowledge is communicated in the new specialized discourse of a series of multimodal texts existing in Arla Corporation’s website at: http://www.arla.com/closer-tonature/from-nature-to-you/. The texts are a part of “Closer to Nature” marketing campaign promoting environmentally friendly products and positioning Arla as an eco-friendly corporation. In order to investigate how knowledge about business greening is communicated in accordance with the potential and constraints of linguistic features and images, the paper draws upon a multimodal methodological framework. The paper intends to establish which semiotic mode is given prominence in the multimodal interplay by examining the functional differentiation of the two semiotic modes. Furthermore, as the greening of business is persuasively promoted, the paper also intends to contribute with a discussion of new multimodal processes of discursive transformation like evaluation and legitimation.

The New Specialized Discourse of Business Greening: A Multimodal Approach to Environmental Knowledge Communication

In Spanish, two-participant verbs of consumption (such as tragar ‘swallow’) may variably occur with the reflexive marker se. This paper provides a quantitative analysis of this variation in a corpus of spoken and written Peninsular Spanish in order to test the hypothesis that the construction with se correlates with High Transitivity (Hopper & Thompson 1980). We operationalize grammatical, semantic, and pragmatic characteristics that are associated with High Transitivity: definiteness and generalizability of the direct object, volitionality of the subject, polarity, tense and verb. Additionally, this study operationalizes person and text type in order to test the extent to which all of these characteristics correlate with the use of the reflexive clitic in Peninsular Spanish. The results show that the presence of se is primarily conditioned by the verb and that the other characteristics contribute to the use of the reflexive in varying degrees, depending on the verb.

“Como no me trago el humo...:” A Corpus-Based Approach to Aspectual Se

On s'interesse ici aux morphemes qui fonctionnent en synchronie dans differentes categories syntaxiques et que l'on designera comme des « marqueurs transcategoriels » et l'on propose une ebauche de typologie de la transcategorialite et de ses liens avec la nature des systemes linguistiques. On est ainsi amene a distinguer trois types de fonctionnements transcategoriels qui peuvent etre relies a differentes strategies de distribution de l'information dans les systemes linguistiques. (1) Dans les langues a morphologie lourde (e.g. flexionnelles), le changement de categorie tend a etre limite et oriente d'une categorie a une autre (transcategorialite “orientee”) ; il correspond aux cas classiques de grammaticalisation (2) Dans les langues a morphologie faible (e.g. isolantes), les unites de la langue apparaissent comme des notions generiques pas ou peu pre-categorisees, et dont l'appartenance categorielle sera fixee en discours (langues “type-occurrence”) ; la transcategorialite est alors massive et “generique”. Enfin (3), un troisieme type de fonctionnement transcategoriel, releve notamment dans des langues agglutinantes et en japonais, correspond a une strategie distribuee de l'information grammaticale (unites distinctes pour indiquer les roles semantiques et les roles syntaxiques) qui permet aux morphemes indiquant des roles semantiques de s'appliquer a des structures syntaxiques variees ; on parlera alors de transcategorialite “fonctionnelle”. Les manifestations variables de la transcategorialite dans les langues semblent donc pouvoir etre, au moins en partie, reliees a la nature de leurs systemes.
