Edouard Glissant in Theory and Practice: A Diasporic Poetics of Politics.

In this paper it will be argued that the difference between existential and locative sentences is primarily structurally encoded at the vP/VP level (at the first phase of a derivation). The crucial question is which argument of the verb BE (the Location or the nominal argument (“Theme”)) is projected as the “external argument”, i.e., which argument is the subject of inner predication. In the case of existential sentences it is the Location argument which is the subject of inner predication, and in the case of locative sentences it is the nominal argument. The subject of inner predication becomes by default also the subject of outer predication, i.e., the topic of the sentence. Hence, in the case of locative sentences the nominal argument is the subject of outer predication, i.e., the topic of the sentence, and in the case of existential sentences it is the Location which becomes the topic. (Or, alternatively, the actual topic (the subject of outer predication) might be the situational/ event variable, and the Location functions as a restriction on it.) However, the actual arrangement of constituents in the sentences under discussion, as in any other Polish sentence, is determined by the pragmatic/communicative principles. Given this, it is reasonable to think that the NOM/GEN case alternation in negated existential/locative sentences is primarily a matter of syntax, and not one of information structure or scope of negation. The analysis will be modeled in accordance with the phasal model of Chomsky (2000 et seq.).

En mi articulo, presentare una aproximacion desde el saber-poder al discurso academico. Partiendo de desarrollos pragmaticos y post-estructuralistas en teoria social, este modelo teoriza el reto que los investigadores academicos deben afrontar en el discurso academico: asegurarse un lugar en el mundo social de los investigadores. Los investigadores que participan en el discurso academico generalmente deben combinar dos tipos de posiciones: por un lado, necesitan encontrar su lugar entre las multiples comunidades cientificas, i. e. en el mundo del conocimiento especializado. Por otro, necesitan situarse en una institucion de educacion superior, con sus grupos de estatus, jerarquias y reglas burocraticas, i. e. en el mundo del poder institucional. Si los investigadores quieren ocupar las posiciones mas atractivas del campo academico, deben prosperar en ambos mundos al mismo tiempo. Aunque sus carreras, estrategias y “recetas” pueden ser muy diferentes, todos los investigadores se implican en el discurso academico, entendido como una practica de posicionamiento continuo basada en publicaciones, en la que las posiciones simbolicas (i. e. como especialista en la Antiguedad tardia) deben transformarse gradualmente en posiciones institucionales (i. e. como catedratico de Historia Antigua).

Concernant les troubles du langage ecrit, l’orthophoniste est souvent confronte, dans sa pratique, a des distorsions entre le motif de consultation initial, le profil obtenu aux tests normes et la realite clinique d’un meme enfant. Nous nous sommes alors demande ce qui pouvait en etre a l’origine. D’apres nos connaissances theoriques et nos lectures, et sachant que nos patients sont souvent adresses par leur enseignant, nous avons elabore l’hypothese suivante : dans l’identification de la pathologie du langage ecrit, il existe un ecart entre la representation qu’a l’enseignant de la norme et la norme relative au test etalonne. Pour verifier cette hypothese, nous avons mis au point une double experimentation. La premiere cherchait a objectiver, grâce a un test etalonne, une pathologie orthographique chez des enfants percus comme de bons eleves par leurs enseignants. Nous avons donc soumis ces enfants a la passation du « Chronosdictees ». Ensuite, afin de verifier si la maitrise du langage ecrit, donc de l’orthographe, etait bien un critere d’identification des bons eleves d’apres les enseignants, nous avons mis au point un questionnaire a leur destination. Cette deuxieme experimentation etait aussi l’occasion de recueillir davantage de precisions sur le regard qu’ils portaient sur leurs eleves et sur les indices leur permettant d’en adresser certains en bilan orthophonique. L’analyse des performances des bons eleves a la dictee etalonnee met en evidence qu’il existe bien, pour certains enfants, un ecart entre la representation de la norme que se forgent les enseignants et la norme erigee par le test etalonne. Cette etude a en effet pu determiner des elements significatifs d’une pathologie orthographique chez 7 des 30 enfants testes. Par ailleurs, l’analyse des questionnaires confirme que la maitrise de la langue ecrite, donc de l’orthographe, est bien un critere d’identification des bons eleves pour tous les enseignants. D’autre part, leurs reponses nous permettent de souligner qu’ils connaissent et s’accordent sur les domaines d’intervention de l’orthophoniste sans toutefois disposer des memes criteres pour identifier les bons et les moins bons eleves de leur classe. Ces divergences mettent en evidence que chacun d’eux a ses propres representations de la normalite et de ses limites, donc sa propre maniere de « situer » un enfant par rapport a une norme et ses propres criteres pour l’adresse des plus en difficulte vers un orthophoniste.

OF THESIS “HOME IS MORE THAN JUST A PLACE”: ORAL PERSONAL NARRATIVE STORYTELLING IN CENTRAL APPALACHIA This project seeks a linguistic understanding of oral personal narrative storytelling in Central Appalachia, particularly as it manifests in Eastern Kentucky, with aims of providing insight into the Appalachian storyteller trope (e.g., Montgomery 1998). Structural and discursive elements of oral personal narrative were identified and positioned within their sociocultural context through discourse analysis and narrative studies. Data were collected from story circles, a methodology first implemented in cultural and community organizing spaces in the South and throughout Appalachia (Roadside Theater 2014, Junebug Productions n.d.). The collected stories were transcribed and analyzed through a discourse analysis framework that combines discourse pragmatics, sociocultural linguistics, and narrative analysis (e.g., Grice 1975, Ochs 2004, Bucholtz and Hall 2005, Davies 2008, Falconi and Graber 2019). A post-mortem survey established a baseline for rootedness, or place-based identity (Reed 2016), as well as demographic information, task comfortability, and selfand peer-evaluation. The author posits Central Appalachians approach oral personal narrative structure and performance in a stylistically unorthodox manner. Several potential explanations for the prevalence of the storyteller trope in and outside of the region are offered, limited by their need for further study.
