27 Nov 1989TL;DR: In this article, an unforgeable personal identification system for identifying users at remote access control sites is presented, which generates one-way encrypted versions of physically immutable identification credentials (facial photo, retinal scan, voice and finger prints).
Abstract: An unforgeable personal identification system for identifying users at remote access control sites. The unforgeable personal identification system generates one-way encrypted versions of physically immutable identification credentials (facial photo, retinal scan, voice and finger prints). These credentials are stored on a portable memory device (credit card size). At a remote access control site, the user presents his portable memory device and the encrypted identification credentials are read. The user then submits physically to inputting of his physical identification characteristics to the remote access control site. Comparison is performed with the credentials obtained from the memory device and with the user's physical identity to determine whether to allow or deny access at the remote site.

19 Nov 2003TL;DR: An overview of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is provided and some comparisons with the existing standards, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part 2, are also provided.
Abstract: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is the latest coding standard jointly developed by the Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) of ITU-T and Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) of ISO/IEC. It uses state of the art coding tools and provides enhanced coding efficiency for a wide range of applications including video telephony, video conferencing, TV, storage (DVD and/or hard disk based), streaming video, digital video creation, digital cinema and others. In this paper an overview of this standard is provided. Some comparisons with the existing standards, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part 2, are also provided.

TL;DR: This paper proposes some new feature extractors based on maximum margin criterion (MMC) and establishes a new linear feature extractor that does not suffer from the small sample size problem, which is known to cause serious stability problems for LDA.
Abstract: In pattern recognition, feature extraction techniques are widely employed to reduce the dimensionality of data and to enhance the discriminatory information. Principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) are the two most popular linear dimensionality reduction methods. However, PCA is not very effective for the extraction of the most discriminant features, and LDA is not stable due to the small sample size problem . In this paper, we propose some new (linear and nonlinear) feature extractors based on maximum margin criterion (MMC). Geometrically, feature extractors based on MMC maximize the (average) margin between classes after dimensionality reduction. It is shown that MMC can represent class separability better than PCA. As a connection to LDA, we may also derive LDA from MMC by incorporating some constraints. By using some other constraints, we establish a new linear feature extractor that does not suffer from the small sample size problem, which is known to cause serious stability problems for LDA. The kernelized (nonlinear) counterpart of this linear feature extractor is also established in the paper. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the new feature extractors are effective, stable, and efficient.

TL;DR: Two novel equalizers are developed for ZP-OFDM to tradeoff performance with implementation complexity andSimulations tailored to the realistic context of the standard for wireless local area network HIPERLAN/2 illustrate the pertinent tradeoffs.
Abstract: Zero padding (ZP) of multicarrier transmissions has been proposed as an appealing alternative to the traditional cyclic prefix (CP) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to ensure symbol recovery regardless of the channel zero locations. In this paper, both systems are studied to delineate their relative merits in wireless systems where channel knowledge is not available at the transmitter. Two novel equalizers are developed for ZP-OFDM to tradeoff performance with implementation complexity. Both CP-OFDM and ZP-OFDM are then compared in terms of transmitter nonlinearities and required power backoff. Next, both systems are tested in terms of channel estimation and tracking capabilities. Simulations tailored to the realistic context of the standard for wireless local area network HIPERLAN/2 illustrate the pertinent tradeoffs.
