TL;DR: In this paper, a self-aligned and regularly spaced Ge islands are formed on the 〈110〉-oriented ridges of the Si stripe mesas using preferential nucleation sites.
Abstract: We report the ability to arrange self-organized Ge islands on patterned Si (001) substrates. Selective epitaxial growth of Si is carried out with gas-source molecular beam epitaxy to form Si mesas followed by subsequent Ge growth. Self-aligned and regularly spaced Ge islands are formed on the 〈110〉-oriented ridges of the Si stripe mesas. A mono-modal size distribution of the islands has been observed on the ridges. Using preferential nucleation sites allows us to place Ge islands at predetermined positions. The controlled arrangement of self-organized nanostructures offers the potential applications of island arrays for the implementation in nanoelectronics and quantum computation.

TL;DR: In this article, a semiconductor device is provided with test-only contacts to reduce the size of the device and eliminate unnecessary external contacts, including test pads formed on a package substrate.
Abstract: A semiconductor device has test-only contacts to reduce the size of the device and eliminate unnecessary external contacts. In one form of the invention, a semiconductor device (30) is provided with solder balls (26) which are electrically coupled to those portions of a semiconductor die (20) that are necessary for device operation. The device also includes test pads (32) formed on a package substrate (12) which are electrically coupled to those portions of the die which are necessary only for a manufacturer's testing purposes. In another form, a semiconductor device (10) includes external test-only solder balls along the periphery of the package substrate, for example solder balls between boundaries A and B. After testing is complete, the package substrate is excised along boundary A, thereby eliminating solder balls which are not needed by the device user. A combination of the two techniques may also be used.

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method of communications usage management for multiple networked devices such as cellular telephones in a telecommunications network is presented, where a management database is provided for storing communications attributes for at least one networked device.
Abstract: A system and method of communications usage management for multiple networked devices such as cellular telephones in a telecommunications network. A management database is provided for storing communications attributes for at least one networked device. The stored communications usage attributes serve as criteria for regulating access of the networked devices to the system. The users of the devices may purchase a quantity of transferable units, such as usage minutes over the system network, with the units being redeemable for goods and/or services on the system, thus facilitating transfer of units between users. A user interface is provided as a system management device for accessing the management database to configure the communications usage attributes for defining the transfer and usage criteria. Communications usage software operable with the network devices computes usage times to provide an accounting of usage and regulation in accordance with the management database. In the described embodiment, short message service (SMS) traffic is used for messages between networked devices used by several users to purchase quantities of redeemable units for exchange, commercial activities, or recreation which may be facilitated through the system operator.

TL;DR: In this paper, a dynamically configurable switched capacitor power supply and a method for operation thereof is presented, which includes an error detector coupled to the first output, an oscillator for providing a clocking signal, an analog-to-digital conversion circuit for providing an analog representation of a voltage of the power source and control logic for providing the first control signals in response to the clock signal and the error detector.
Abstract: A dynamically configurable switched capacitor power supply and a method for operation thereof. The power supply includes a first dynamically adjustable switched capacitor network having a first input, a first output and including a first plurality of n many switched capacitors. The first input is adapted to be coupled to a power source. The first dynamically adjustable switched capacitor network provides a step-up or step-down power supply regulation function in response to first control signals. The power supply includes a control network having an error detector coupled to the first output, an oscillator for providing a clocking signal, an analog to digital conversion circuit for providing a digital representation of a voltage of the power source and control logic for providing the first control signals in response to the clocking signal and in response to signals from the error detector.

TL;DR: In this article, a two-way personal information system consisting of a personal kiosk system (132) and a personal presence identifier (122) carried by a user and coupled to the personal Kiosk system by a short-range twoway wireless link is described.
Abstract: A personal information system comprises a personal kiosk system (132) and a personal presence identifier (122) carried by a user and coupled to the personal kiosk system by a short-range two-way wireless link. The personal kiosk system and the personal presence identifier are arranged and programmed to establish a two-way personal area network with one another when the personal presence identifier is within wireless transmission range of the personal kiosk system. The personal presence identifier and the personal kiosk system are also arranged and programmed to exchange needs specifications and capability specifications with one another after establishing the two-way personal area network.
