TL;DR: In this paper, an application device (401) is connectable with a donor device (541) such as a portable memory card (560) or widely accessible central database (550).
Abstract: An application device (401) is connectable with a donor device (541) such as a portable memory card (560) or widely accessible central database (550). The donor device (541) stores and provides preferences to the application device (401). The donor device (541) contains a reference preference memory capable of storing preferences for a particular user. A controller (450) accesses the donor device, when the donor device is available, to obtain preferences that pertain to the particular user under certain conditions and stores preferences obtained from the donor device in the session preference memory (490) of the application device (401) for use in a session by the particular user. When the donor device is unavailable, alternate preference establishment procedures are used.

TL;DR: In this paper, a software programmable radio (200) receives information to configure a reconfigurable resource (208) to perform an operation based on the information, such as a waveform for communicating via a spread spectrum technique.
Abstract: A software programmable radio (200) receives information to configure a reconfigurable resource (208) to perform an operation based on the information. A processor (210) within the reconfigurable resource performs a software program in accordance with the operation, such as a waveform for communicating via a spread spectrum technique. The method includes the steps of checking (304) for a valid license granted to the radio to determine when the radio is authorized for use in the network. A controller (204) configures the radio to perform the operation based on the information.

TL;DR: In this paper, a mold lock is used to hold a plastic package with a heat sink to a semiconductor die, and the die bond material can be used to increase heat flow without compromising other characteristics of the package.
Abstract: A plastic package (10) with a heat sink (11, 27, 28, 32) has a stress relief wall (18, 21, 33) formed on its upper surface. A semiconductor die (12) is mounted on the heat sink (11, 27, 28, 32) such that the top of a semiconductor die (12) is below the level of the top of the wall (18, 21, 33), and the wall (18, 21, 33) absorbs stresses which otherwise would be applied to the semiconductor die (12). The package (10) is simple to fabricate and assemble, and provides a mold lock (23, 24, 31) which serves to hold the plastic material (13) tightly to the heat sink (11, 27, 28, 32). Extra die bond material (26) can be used to increase heat flow without compromising other characteristics of the package (10).

TL;DR: In this paper, a microfluidic device with microchannels that have separated regions which have a member of a specific binding pair member such as DNA or RNA bound to porous polymer, beads or structures fabricated into the microchannel is described.
Abstract: The invention relates to a microfluidic device with microchannels that have separated regions which have a member of a specific binding pair member such as DNA or RNA bound to porous polymer, beads or structures fabricated into the microchannel. The microchannels of the invention are fabricated from plastic and are operatively associated with a fluid propelling component and detector.

TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus and method for selective distributed speech recognition includes a dialog manager that is capable of receiving a grammar type indicator (170), which can be coupled to an external speech recognition engine (108), which may be disposed on a communication network.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for selective distributed speech recognition includes a dialog manager (104) that is capable of receiving a grammar type indicator (170). The dialog manager (104) is capable of being coupled to an external speech recognition engine (108), which may be disposed on a communication network (142). The apparatus and method further includes an audio receiver (102) coupled to the dialog manager (104) wherein the audio receiver (104) receives a speech input (110) and provides an encoded audio input (112) to the dialog manager (104). The method and apparatus also includes an embedded speech recognition engine (106) coupled to the dialog manager (104), such that the dialog manager (104) selects to distribute the encoded audio input (112) to either the embedded speech recognition engine (106) or the external speech recognition engine (108) based on the corresponding grammar type indicator (170).
