Intervention strategies for the reduction of microbiological contamination on the hands of food handlers

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate intervention strategies for the reduction of microbiological contamination on the hands of food handlers. The study was conducted from January 2009 to December 2014 at a food and nutrition company in Curitiba, Brazil. Samples from the hands of 877 handlers were collected for microbiological analysis. The intervention strategies applied during each year were: 2009, substitute the use of odorless liquid soap and an antiseptic product by one product; 2010, was increasing the staff of technical supervisors and conducting biannual training; 2011 was to move the lavatories for handwashing, and the use of 70% alcohol gel; 2012, was to increase the frequency of the training of food handlers; 2013, was new weekly monitoring, to evaluation of the use of bactericide soap; 2013 and 2014 was implemented an internal program to verify food production. The intervention introduced in 2011 the 2012 and 2013 the 2014 reduced the contamination of the hands of food handlers. The use of 70% alcohol gel, the moving of the location of the lavatories, weekly monitoring of the use of bactericide soap and implementation of the internal program, were the strategies that contributed the most to the reduction of the microbial.

Neurotological Findings at a Health Unit for Adults with Cervicalgia

Abstract: Introduction The cervical spine is a flexible link between the sensory platform of the skull and torso. The fundamental principle of its operation is due to the balance between muscle strength and flexibility, and any dysfunction of this balance causes neck pain, known as cervicalgia. Objective The objective of this study is to analyze the most prevalent neurotological findings in adults with neck pain. Method A cross-sectional study in which 33 adults from 50 to 83 years of age with neck pain were evaluated and underwent the following procedures: anamnesis, as well as ENT, audiological, and vestibular exams. Results The most evident neurotological symptoms were dizziness (75.7%), tinnitus, neck cracking, tingling in the extremities, and auditory problems (36.3% for each). The most frequently reported clinical symptoms were related to cardiovascular (69.7%), endocrine-metabolic (48.5%), and rheumatic (30.3%) systems. In the audiological assessment, 30 subjects (91.0%) presented hearing impairment in at least one ear, with sensorineural impairment being the most prevalent (88.0%). In the vestibular assessment, there were alterations in 13 subjects (39.0%) found in the caloric test. There was a prevalence of alterations in the peripheral vestibular system with a predominance of irritative peripheral vestibular dysfunction. Conclusion Neurotological complaints were frequent in this population, verifying the importance of these tests in the dysfunctions of the cervical region or the craniocervical junction.

VoIP: Inovação Disruptiva no Mercado de Telefonia Corporativa

Abstract: O uso corporativo dos servicos de telefonia vem sendo transformado pelo VoIP (Voice over IP) ao longo dos ultimos anos. Trata-se de uma inovacao tecnologica significativa que afeta as empresas fornecedoras tradicionais do mercado corporativo de telefonia, seja pela mudanca do modelo de negocios ao qual elas estavam acostumadas, seja por possibilitar a entrada de novos concorrentes. O objetivo do estudo foi verificar a aplicabilidade do modelo de inovacao disruptiva proposto por Christensen para compreender o que esta acontecendo neste mercado, em especifico. Para tanto, os autores coletaram e analisaram, de uma forma sistematica, informacoes e opinioes publicadas pela imprensa especializada sobre o mercado corporativo de telefonia, considerando o momento de turbulencia vivenciado a partir da ascensao da tecnologia VoIP. Observou-se que as empresas incumbentes demoraram em reconhecer a ameaca imposta pelos novos entrantes e pela nova tecnologia por eles proposta e, em um estagio posterior, optou-se por estrategias que envolviam a tentativa de migracao de seus produtos tradicionais para uma solucao hibrida, em uma abordagem de evolucao nitidamente incremental. O produto dos novos entrantes, que no inicio nao satisfazia a necessidade dos clientes tradicionais, evoluiu rapidamente, suprindo antes as necessidades do low end do mercado. Isto lhes permitiu adquirir forcas para continuar o desenvolvimento de seus produtos, radicalmente diferentes dos anteriormente disponiveis, ate que, a partir de dado momento, o produto passou a suprir tambem as demandas dos clientes mais exigentes, que passaram a ser atendidos com solucoes baseadas na nova tecnologia. Percebeu-se, portanto, que o caso analisado nao so pode ser facilmente compreendido a partir do modelo da inovacao disruptiva de Christensen, como representa um otimo exemplo da sua eficacia explicativa.

A influência da renovação da frota de veículos na qualidade do ar na região central de Curitiba

Abstract: Os veiculos sao a principal fonte dos poluentes atmosfericos nos centrosurbanos. As tecnologias mais importantes para a reducao dos poluentes emveiculos automotores foram o controle eletronico da injecao de combustiveise a utilizacao de catalisador no sistema de exaustao dos veiculos. O objetivodeste trabalho foi avaliar se a renovacao da frota de veiculos alterou aqualidade do ar em Curitiba. Foi realizado o levantamento do historico dasconcentracoes dos poluentes do ar, no periodo de 2003 a 2014, e do historicoda frota de veiculos de Curitiba – com base em dados do Departamentode Trânsito do Parana (DETRAN-PR). Verificou-se um aumento de 65% nonumero de veiculos, que nao resultou no aumento da concentracao dospoluentes. As concentracoes de poluentes apresentaram queda ao longo doperiodo avaliado. Conclui-se que a renovacao da frota proporcionou umamelhoria na qualidade do ar em Curitiba.
