TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the way the growth ideology deals with the contradictions of sustainable development discourse and find that the defense of growth as if it were of primary collective interest, and the denial of contradictions, evidenced by conflicts between the environmental, economic and social dimensions of the Triple Bottom Line concept.
Abstract: This study investigates the way the growth ideology deals with the contradictions of sustainable development discourse. Reports from newspapers were analyzed, which linked state-owned companies and companies of mixed economy operating in the business of electricity generation and listed in the ISE BMF (ii) the defense of growth as if it were of primary collective interest, and (iii) the denial of contradictions, evidenced by conflicts between the environmental, economic and social dimensions of the Triple Bottom Line concept.

20 Dec 2009TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyze the process of institutionalization of VoIP and deinstitutionalization of circuit switched technologies in Organization Alpha's product strategy, both in the global and the Brazilian context, from 1993 to 2008.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to analyze the process of institutionalization of VoIP and deinstitutionalization of circuit switched technologies in Organization Alpha's product strategy, both in the global and the Brazilian context, from 1993 to 2008. Based on the institutional theory's theoretical framework, Oliver's typologies (1991, 1992) were used to understand the environmental (politics, social and instrumental) pressures and the organization's strategic responses (acquiescence, compromise, avoidance, challenge and manipulation). The research has a longitudinal perspective and involves the use of the case study method, with qualitative data having been collected, organized and analyzed. Data collection involved access to secondary sources and semi-structured interviews with employees of Alpha. Data has evidenced the fact that the circuit switched technology was being replaced by the VoIP technology and new practices concerning sales, marketing, R&D and service. It became clear that the change has been happening in a gradual way, with responses that involved challenging, avoiding, compromising and accepting the new technology. At some stages, manipulation was also depicted. At the end of the period of this study, the institutionalization of the VoIP technology at Alpha was at an advanced stage, in fact, ahead of the market.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors identify determinants of proficiencies in these processes, and measure the impact of the main determinants on the Proficiencies on the state of Parana.
Abstract: Most empirical studies on the identification of determinants of innovation deal with innovation without descending to the level of its underlying processes. The objective of this study is twofold: to identify determinants of proficiencies in these processes, and to measure the impact of the main determinants on the proficiencies. The data used originated mainly from three surveys conducted in the Brazilian state of Parana. We built ordered probit econometric models for the proficiencies, with explanatory variables related to contextual and internal factors of the firms. The main determinants identified were the organisational structure and assignment of responsibility for innovation, the technological standing of the firm, and the number of certifications (quality, environmental, and others) held. We found a negative association, much to our surprise, between the use of government incentives and the proficiencies in intellectual property management and in technology monitoring and forecasting.

TL;DR: The cropping system (soybean) had the lowest abundance and species richness in relation to other sites, although in the young and old forests no earthworms were found on some sample dates, and further efforts are needed to adequately characterize the earthworm fauna of the region.
Abstract: The Campos Gerais region of Parana are on an ancient plateau of sandstone origin and are covered with a diverse vegetation including mainly grasslands and various types of Atlantic Forest (particularly Araucaria forest). The region represents an important natural capital for biodiversity conservation as well as for agricultural and forestry production. However, little is known of the species richness and diversity of soil macroinvertebrates in this region. In the present study we evaluated earthworm species occurrence and richness in five land use systems (LUS) in the southern part of the Campos Gerais in Lapa county. Earthworms were handsorted from up to 18 soil monoliths on five occasions over three years (Feb. 2014, Feb., Mar., Nov. 2015, Jul. 2016) in the following LUS: old native forest, native grassland, young regenerating forest and grass lawn in the Uru Reserve and annual crop fields (soybean) in neighboring private farms (not all systems were sampled on all occasions). Nine earthworm species belonging to four families and five genera were found, of which six were native and three exotic species (Dichogaster gracilis, Amynthas gracilis, A. corticis). Of the native species, Urobenus brasiliensis and Andiorrhinus duseni (a large bodied-worm) are already well known from S and SE Brazil, while the remaining four were new species that require further description (Fimoscolex n.sp.1 and n.sp.2, Glossoscolex n.sp.1 and n.sp.2). In general, more species were found in February (summer) than March and November. The cropping system (soybean) had the lowest abundance and species richness in relation to other sites, although in the young and old forests no earthworms were found on some sample dates. Given the several new species found in this small reserve, and the relatively few sites studied thus far in the Campos Gerais, further efforts are needed to adequately characterize the earthworm fauna of the region, from which many other species are expected.

TL;DR: It is revealed that 60 days after BUP injection, the extra ocular muscle of rabbits presented an increase in the CSA of myosin 1 type fibers in the global layer.
Abstract: To verify the cross sectional area (CSA) of fibers positive for myosin type 1 in the global and orbital layers after bupivacaine (BUP) injection in the superior rectus of the right eye of rabbits. ...
