Abstract: Postmodern society is characterised by consumers’ hedonistic behaviours and values, in which experience consumption is a form of differentiation and social elevation. This study sought to understand consumers’ online manifestations of boutique hotel experiences and individuals’ motivations for engaging in electronic word-of-mouth. The research considered prior studies on experiential consumption, as well as publications focused on understanding postmodern individuals. Netnography was used to collect data on – and analyse – post-consumption behaviours boutique hotels. Participant observation was conducted of the online manifestations of boutique hotel consumers’ experiences. The research also included computer-mediated speech analysis, image analysis of virtually extracted data and discourse analysis of interviews with users identified from previous interactions and online postings. This study’s approach was based on a different perspective than that of Pine and Gilmore’s work, utilising instead the experience economy, postmodern consumer analysis and boutique hotel concepts. Observations revealed that exclusivity and privacy are central elements determining consumers’ choice and definition of boutique hotels. However, online manifestations of experiences reveal exhibitionist and paradoxical behaviours.

This study aims to describe and analyze aspects related to innovation of enterprises based on the Brazilian research developed by the GEM - Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. The data used for the development of the study are secondary data and were published in those reports for the years 2006, 2007 and 2008. The search results classify Brazil among the countries most entrepreneurs, however, such studies have shown that the country has low rates when it comes to innovation in business. Thus, the study includes some notes regarding the possible reasons leading to low rates of innovation in Brazilian companies.

Abstract: OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a medida de acuidade visual (AV), por meio da tabela de Snellen, em consultorios de tres grandes centros oftalmologicos de Curitiba, comparar essas medidas entre si, com um metodo computadorizado para afericao de AV, e tambem, com o padrao teorico desenvolvido por Hermann Snellen. METODOS: Estudo descritivo incluindo 15 consultorios oftalmologicos e um metodo computadorizado para a medida de AV. Com o auxilio de uma trena e um paquimetro foi realizada a medida da distância do olho do paciente sentado ate a parede de projecao dos optotipos e, ao mesmo tempo, medido o tamanho da letra que era projetada na parede para 4 linhas de AV. RESULTADOS: Para a analise dos resultados, optamos por comparar os ângulos apresentados por cada consultorio no momento da realizacao da medida. Sem surpresas, observou-se que nenhum consultorio obteve o ângulo exato de 5 minutos de arco. Comparando-se os consultorios com o metodo computadorizado, observou-se que apenas 2 consultorios obtiveram melhores resultados se comparados os ângulos de projecao dos optotipos, porem os dados sao muito proximos e insignificantes estatisticamente. Ja em relacao aos demais consultorios, a superioridade do metodo computadorizado e bastante relevante. Todos tiveram diferencas significantes em relacao ao padrao-ouro. Ainda individualmente, comparou-se o metodo computadorizado com o padrao teorico Snellen e observou-se que esse obteve condicoes muito proximas do ideal, ou seja, em todas as acuidades visuais analisadas esteve sempre proximo dos 5 minutos de arco. CONCLUSOES: Podemos concluir que existe uma grande heterogeneidade na avaliacao da AV nos diferentes centros de oftalmologia. Tambem se pode esperar que para um mesmo paciente, avaliado em diferentes consultorios, ha a possibilidade de se obter diferencas nas medidas da AV. O metodo computadorizado avaliado e pratico, portatil, ajustavel a distâncias diversas, mantem a razao de proporcionalidade dos optotipos baseada no ângulo visual e se aproxima em muito ao padrao teorico preconizado por Herman Snellen em 1862.

Abstract: Objective: To survey the sociocultural profile of a specific group of individuals who donated teeth to the Human Tooth Bank of Positivo University, Curitiba, Parana, Brazil. Methods: The research consisted of a questionnaire containing the following information about: Patient’s age, sex, occupation, education, reason for tooth loss and intention to replace the missing tooth by means of prosthesis or implant. The questionnaire was filled out by 50 patients after having the extraction procedure performed and donating the dental organ. The data were compiled and analyzed by means of descriptive and multivariate statistics. Results: The sociocultural profile of the donor was basically composed of individuals in the age group between 30 and 50 years, with educational level ranging from zero to nine or more years of formal schooling. Caries disease was the most frequent reason for tooth loss (36%), followed by periodontal disease (34%). Of the donors analyzed, more than half did not intend to replace the tooth. Furthermore, according to the multivariate analysis, the most relevant factors for assessing the profile of donors were the variables age, orthodontic indication, caries and periodontal disease. Conclusion: This information was shown to be relevant for structuring the oral health care services, as well as in the strategy for obtaining teeth from the Public Health Units.
