Protective Role for Toll-Like Receptor-9 in the Development of Atherosclerosis in Apolipoprotein E–Deficient Mice
Christine Koulis,Yung-Chih Chen,Christian Hausding,Ingo Ahrens,Tin Kyaw,Christopher Tay,Terri J. Allen,Karin Jandeleit-Dahm,Matthew J. Sweet,Shizuo Akira,Alex Bobik,Karlheinz Peter,Alex Agrotis +12 more
TL;DR: Genetic deletion of the innate immune receptor TLR9 exacerbated atherosclerosis in ApoE−/− mice fed a high-fat diet and administration of a type B CpG oligodeoxynucleotide TLR 9 agonist reduced lesion severity, thus identifying a novel therapeutic approach in Atherosclerosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Muramyl Dipeptide Enhances Osteoclast Formation Induced by Lipopolysaccharide, IL-1α, and TNF-α through Nucleotide-Binding Oligomerization Domain 2-Mediated Signaling in Osteoblasts
Shuhua Yang,Naoyuki Takahashi,Teruhito Yamashita,Nobuaki Sato,Masahiro Takahashi,Makio Mogi,Takashi Uematsu,Yasuhiro Kobayashi,Yuko Nakamichi,Kiyoshi Takeda,Shizuo Akira,Haruhiko Takada,Nobuyuki Udagawa,Kiyofumi Furusawa +13 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that MDP synergistically enhances osteoclast formation induced by LPS, IL-1α, and TNF-α through RANKL expression in osteoblasts, and that Nod2-mediated signals are involved in the MDP-induced RANKl expression in bone-resorbing cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Elucidation of the c-Jun N-Terminal Kinase Pathway Mediated by Epstein-Barr Virus-Encoded Latent Membrane Protein 1
Jun Wan,Luguo Sun,Jennifer Woo Mendoza,Yiu-Loon Chui,Dolly P. Huang,Zhijian J. Chen,Nobutaka Suzuki,Shinobu Suzuki,Wen Chen Yeh,Shizuo Akira,Kunihiro Matsumoto,Zheng-gang Liu,Zhenguo Wu +12 more
TL;DR: In contrast to the prevailing paradigm, using embryonic fibroblasts from different knockout mice and the small interfering RNA technique, it is found that the LMP1-mediated JNK pathway is distinct from those mediated by either TNF-α or interleukin-1.
Journal ArticleDOI
Induction of adaptive immunity by flagellin does not require robust activation of innate immunity
Catherine J. Sanders,Luigi Franchi,Felix Yarovinsky,Satoshi Uematsu,Shizuo Akira,Gabriel Núñez,Andrew T. Gewirtz +6 more
TL;DR: The results indicate that the degree of innate immune activation induced by TLR agonists may be in great excess of that needed to promote humoral immunity and, secondly, there is considerable redundancy in mechanisms that promote the humoral immune response upon innate immune recognition of flagellin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toll/IL-1 receptor domain-containing adaptor inducing IFN-beta (TRIF)-mediated signaling contributes to innate immune responses in the lung during Escherichia coli pneumonia.
Samithamby Jeyaseelan,Scott K. Young,Michael B. Fessler,Yuhong Liu,Kenneth C. Malcolm,Masahiro Yamamoto,Shizuo Akira,G. Scott Worthen +7 more
TL;DR: It is found that rapid activation of TRIF-dependent TLR4-mediated signaling cascade serves to augment pulmonary host defense against a Gram-negative pathogen.
