TL;DR: In this paper, a hybrid vehicle equipped with an engine and a motor that are connected to a driveshaft linked to an axle via a gear mechanism, on condition that an output torque of the motor is not lower than a preset reference output torque Tm2ref (step S130 and S180) at a moment of a start requirement of the engine (steps S130, S180), the drive control of the vehicle starts the engine, regardless of the start requirement.
Abstract: In a hybrid vehicle equipped with an engine and a motor that are connected to a driveshaft linked to an axle via a gear mechanism, on condition that an output torque of the motor (previous Tm2*) is not lower than a preset reference output torque Tm2ref (step S190) at a moment of a start requirement of the engine (steps S130 and S180), the drive control of the invention starts the engine (step S220). On conditions that the output torque of the motor (previous Tm2*) is lower than the preset reference output torque Tm2ref (step S190), that a torque demand Tr* is lower than a preset reference torque level Tref (step S200), and that a state of charge SOC of a battery is not lower than a preset reference charge level Sref (step S210), the drive control keeps the engine at a stop (step S140), regardless of the start requirement. This arrangement effectively reduces the potential for backlash or gear rattle in the gear mechanism due to a torque pulsation applied to the driveshaft at a start of the engine.

TL;DR: In this paper, a range of energy efficiency measures in the transportation sector as discussed in AR4 and assess their potentials for improving fuel efficiency are reviewed and evaluated for light-duty vehicles.
Abstract: A key message of the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is that improved energy efficiency is one of society’s most important instruments for combating climate change. This article reviews a range of energy efficiency measures in the transportation sector as discussed in AR4 and assess their potentials for improving fuel efficiency. The primary focus is on light-duty vehicles because they represent the largest portion of world transport energy use and carbon dioxide emissions; freight trucks, a rapidly expanding source of greenhouse emissions, are also discussed. Increasing energy efficiency can be achieved by improving the design and technology used in new vehicles, but vehicle technology is only one component of fleet fuel economy. Measures that create strong incentives for customers to take energy efficiency into consideration when buying and operating their vehicles will be crucial to policy success.

TL;DR: In this paper, a feedback control type shock absorbing suspension system is inserted between a body including a vibration source and a foundation for suspension of the body, which includes a suspending spring mechanism.
Abstract: A feedback control type shock absorbing suspension system is inserted between a body including a vibration source and a foundation for suspension of the body. The absorbing system includes a suspending spring mechanism. A sensor mechanism detects velocity of relative movement between the body and the foundation. A cylinder-piston mechanism includes a cylinder connected to one of the body and the foundation and a piston connected to the other of the body and the foundation. Magnetic fluid or powder is held between the inner wall of the cylinder and the outer wall of the piston. An exciting coil generates magnetic flux for magnetizing the magnetic fluid or powder. An electric circuit applies to the exciting coil a control voltage which corresponds to the detected value of the sensor mechanism. The vibration-damping force between the cylinder and the piston is controlled by magnetizing the magnetic fluid or powder.

TL;DR: In this article, a land vehicle navigation system is adapted to display the present position of a vehicle by receiving signals from a combination of satellites under the global positioning navigation system, superposed over map data.
Abstract: A land vehicle navigation system is adapted to display the present position of a vehicle by receiving signals from a combination of satellites under the global positioning navigation system. The present position of the vehicle is displayed on a screen, superposed over map data. To obtain the best global positioning data, the combination of satellites is selected in connectio with the visibility. To perform the positive reception of signals from the satellites as the vehicle is running in an urban area, data relating to the building height around the area can be obtained from a geographical information section including data indicative of the map and the building height distribution with respect to the area to determine the visibility.
