TLDR
Prevalence and severity of health loss were weakly correlated and age-specific prevalence of YLDs increased with age in all regions and has decreased slightly from 1990 to 2010, but population growth and ageing have increased YLD numbers and crude rates over the past two decades.

Benefits of flu vaccination for persons with diabetes mellitus: A review

TL;DR: Routine influenza vaccination in persons with diabetes mellitus is justified, as the use of influenza vaccine is far below target worldwide, and efforts should be made to increase vaccination coverage.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pain: a statistical account

TL;DR: It is argued that the experience of pain is no different; it is based on incomplete, multimodal information, which is used to estimate potential bodily threat, and a Bayesian inference model is outlined, incorporating the key components of cue combination, causal inference, and temporal integration.
Journal ArticleDOI

Long‐term opioid therapy for chronic non‐cancer pain in Germany

TL;DR: No data are available on the prevalence and predictors of (high‐dose) long‐term opioid therapy (LTOT) and on abuse/addiction of prescribed opioids by patients with chronic non‐cancer pain (CNCP) outside North America and Scandinavia.
Journal ArticleDOI

Protocol for the systematic review of the prevention, treatment and public health management of impetigo, scabies and fungal skin infections in resource-limited settings.

TL;DR: The evidence derived from the systematic review will be used to inform the development of guidelines for the management of skin infections in resource-limited settings, and will be intended for use by clinicians, public health practitioners and policy makers in the treatment ofskin infections and theDevelopment of skin infection control programmes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pesticides and other occupational exposures are associated with airway obstruction: the LifeLines cohort study.

TL;DR: Occupational exposure to VGDF and pesticides was associated with a lower level of FEV1 and FEV 1/FVC and with a higher prevalence of mild and moderate/severe airway obstruction in the two general populations investigated, and there were no associations with exposure to solvents.

Global and regional mortality from 235 causes of death for 20 age groups in 1990 and 2010: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010

Rafael Lozano, +195 more
- 15 Dec 2012 -
TL;DR: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 aimed to estimate annual deaths for the world and 21 regions between 1980 and 2010 for 235 causes, with uncertainty intervals (UIs), separately by age and sex, using the Cause of Death Ensemble model.

Cancer Incidence in Five Continents

TL;DR: The aim of this study was to establish a database of histological groups and to provide a level of consistency and quality of data that could be applied in the design of future registries.

The epidemiology of major depressive disorder: results from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R).

TL;DR: Notably, major depressive disorder is a common disorder, widely distributed in the population, and usually associated with substantial symptom severity and role impairment, and while the recent increase in treatment is encouraging, inadequate treatment is a serious concern.
Book

The global burden of disease: a comprehensive assessment of mortality and disability from diseases injuries and risk factors in 1990 and projected to 2020.

TL;DR: This is the first in a planned series of 10 volumes that will attempt to "summarize epidemiological knowledge about all major conditions and most risk factors" and use historical trends in main determinants to project mortality and disease burden forward to 2020.
