TLDR
Prevalence and severity of health loss were weakly correlated and age-specific prevalence of YLDs increased with age in all regions and has decreased slightly from 1990 to 2010, but population growth and ageing have increased YLD numbers and crude rates over the past two decades.

Genetic and biochemical changes of the serotonergic system in migraine pathobiology

TL;DR: The general trend observed is that migraine patients have alterations of neurotransmitter metabolism detected in biological fluids with different biochemistry from controls, however the interpretation of the biological significance of these peripheral changes is unresolved.
Journal ArticleDOI

Can proinflammatory cytokine gene expression explain multifidus muscle fiber changes after an intervertebral disc lesion

TL;DR: These data provide evidence of muscle fiber changes after induction of an IVD lesion and a parallel increase in TNF-&agr; expression, and provide a novel mechanism to explain behavioral and structural changes in multifidus.

Meta-analysis of 375,000 individuals identifies 38 susceptibility loci for migraine

Padhraig Gormley, +102 more
- 03 Nov 2015 -
TL;DR: The largest genetic study of migraine to date, comprising 59,674 cases and 316,078 controls from 22 GWA studies, identified 45 independent single nucleotide polymorphisms significantly associated with migraine risk that map to 38 distinct genomic loci, including 28 loci not previously reported and the first locus identified on chromosome X.

The link between chronic periodontitis and COPD: a common role for the neutrophil?

Adam Usher, +1 more
- 13 Nov 2013 -
TL;DR: The association demonstrated by epidemiological studies, as well as emerging similarities in pathogenesis at the level of the neutrophil, suggest a basis for testing the effects of treatment for one condition upon the severity of the other.
Journal ArticleDOI

Noise-induced hearing loss: an occupational medicine perspective.

TL;DR: Noise prevention programs are paramount in reducing hearing loss as a result of occupational exposures, and trials are currently underway evaluating the role of antioxidants in protection from, and even reversal of, NIHL.

Global and regional mortality from 235 causes of death for 20 age groups in 1990 and 2010: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010

Rafael Lozano, +195 more
- 15 Dec 2012 -
TL;DR: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2010 aimed to estimate annual deaths for the world and 21 regions between 1980 and 2010 for 235 causes, with uncertainty intervals (UIs), separately by age and sex, using the Cause of Death Ensemble model.

Cancer Incidence in Five Continents

TL;DR: The aim of this study was to establish a database of histological groups and to provide a level of consistency and quality of data that could be applied in the design of future registries.

The epidemiology of major depressive disorder: results from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R).

TL;DR: Notably, major depressive disorder is a common disorder, widely distributed in the population, and usually associated with substantial symptom severity and role impairment, and while the recent increase in treatment is encouraging, inadequate treatment is a serious concern.
Book

The global burden of disease: a comprehensive assessment of mortality and disability from diseases injuries and risk factors in 1990 and projected to 2020.

TL;DR: This is the first in a planned series of 10 volumes that will attempt to "summarize epidemiological knowledge about all major conditions and most risk factors" and use historical trends in main determinants to project mortality and disease burden forward to 2020.
