Abstract: The desired program information are read by an optical bar code reading section from a program medium containing program information for automatic broadcast program recording, such as, channels, dates, start times and end times in bar code form. After the program information thus read have been temporarily stored in a program memory section, a transfer switch is operated so that the program information stored in the program memory section are converted to infrared remote control signals and are then transmitted in a wireless manner to an electronic equipment (e.g., a video tape recorder) to be controlled, thereby recording the program for the recording of the desired broadcast program.

Abstract: A word hypothesis module for speech decoding consists of four submodules: vowel center detection, bidirectional tree searches around each vowel center, forward-backward pruning, and additional short words hypotheses. By detecting the strong energy vowel centers, a vowel-centered lexicon tree can be placed at each vowel center and searches can be performed in both the left and right directions, where only simple phone models are used for fast acoustic match. A stage-wise forward-backward technique computes the word-beginning and word-ending likelihood scores over the generated half-word lattice for further pruning of the lattice. To avoid potential miss of short words with weak energy vowel centers, a lexicon tree is compiled for these words and tree searches are performed between each pair of adjacent vowel centers. The integration of the word hypothesizer with a top-down Viterbi beam search in continuous speech decoding provides two-pass decoding which significantly reduces computation time.

Abstract: A zoom lens system is provided that includes a compactly constructed focusing lens unit and that has a suppressed change in the image magnification at the time of movement of a focusing lens unit. The zoom lens system according to the present invention, in order from an object side to an image side, comprises: a first lens unit having positive optical power; a second lens unit having negative optical power; and at least two subsequent lens units, wherein the two lens units includes a lens unit A having positive optical power and a lens unit B arranged on the image side relative to the lens unit A, at the time of zooming, all lens units move in a direction along the optical axis so that intervals between the lens units vary, at the time of focusing, the lens unit B moves in a direction along the optical axis, and at the time of compensating image blur caused by vibration in the zoom lens system, either the entirety of a lens unit arranged on the object side relative to the lens unit A or a sub lens unit which is a part of a lens unit arranged on the object side relative to the lens unit A and is arranged on the image side therein moves in a direction perpendicular to the optical axis.

Abstract: Broadband connectivity to and within the home has been available to consumers for some time through various technologies. Among those technologies, power line communications is an excellent candidate for providing broadband connectivity as it exploits an already existing infrastructure. This infrastructure is much more pervasive than any other wired alternative (both to and within the home), and it allows virtually every line-powered device to become the target of value- added services. Therefore, PLC may be considered as the technological enabler of a multitude of future applications that probably would not be available otherwise. The most fundamental barrier to the widespread adoption of broadband PLC is the current lack of an international technical standard issued by a credible and globally recognized standards-setting body. Hopefully, this barrier will be eliminated soon through the work of the IEEE P1901 Corporate Standards Working Group. This group, which was created in June 2005, is entering a crucial phase. This article stresses the importance of standardization in the PLC context, gives an overview of the current activities of the IEEE P1901 working group, and also describes some of the technical challenges that the future 1901 standard must address to ensure the success of PLC in the marketplace.

Abstract: This paper focuses on fault-tolerant control for a battery-energy-storage system based on a multilevel cascade pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) converter with star configuration. During the occurrence of a single-converter-cell or single-battery-unit fault, the fault-tolerant control enables continuous operation and maintains state-of-charge balancing of the remaining healthy battery units. This enhances both system reliability and availability. A 200-V, 10-kW, 3.6-kW·h laboratory system combining a three-phase cascade PWM converter with nine nickel-metal-hydride battery units is designed, constructed, and tested to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant control.
