11 Jun 1992TL;DR: In this paper, a layer having an irregular sectional surface is formed on the surface of at least one of a pixel electrode and confronting electrode of a liquid crystal layer so that the incident light to the liquid crystal panel is scattered and at the same time diffracted.
Abstract: A layer having an irregular sectional surface is formed on the surface of at least one of a pixel electrode and confronting electrode of a liquid crystal layer so as to confront a liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer is formed of a polymer dispersed liquid crystal. If the layer having an irregular sectional surface is formed in a convex and concave pattern regularly and cyclically, the thus formed layer serves as a diffraction grating. When the liquid crystal is in an OFF condition, the refractive index n of the diffraction grating is different from the refractive index of the liquid crystal layer. As a result, an incident light to the liquid crystal panel is scattered and at the same time, diffracted. When the liquid crystal in in an ON condition, there is no difference in the refractive index between the diffraction grating and the liquid crystal, and the incident light passes straight through. Using the liquid crystal panel as a light valve, the light from a light source is incident to the liquid crystal panel, and the image formed on the liquid crystal panel is projected through a projection lens onto a screen. In the case of a black display, the incident light is scattered or diffracted in the liquid crystal panel according to the projected image. The scattered or diffracted light is stopped by a light shielding part of a aperture, and thus does not arrive at the screen.

29 Jul 1999TL;DR: An image generating apparatus comprising of a camera or a plurality of cameras is defined in this article, where the input image from a camera is mapped into a predetermined space model of a predetermined 3D space.
Abstract: An image generating apparatus comprising: a camera or a plurality of cameras; space reconstructing means for mapping the input image from said camera, into a predetermined space model of a predetermined three-dimensional space; point-of-view converting means of synthesizing an image viewed from an arbitrary virtual point of view in said predetermined three-dimensional space by referencing to said space data mapped by said space reconstructing means; and displaying means of displaying the image converted by said point-of-view converting means.

20 Apr 1999TL;DR: In this paper, a distributed speech processing system for constructing speech recognition reference models that are to be used by a speech recognizer in a small hardware device, such as a personal digital assistant or cellular telephone is presented.
Abstract: A distributed speech processing system for constructing speech recognition reference models that are to be used by a speech recognizer in a small hardware device, such as a personal digital assistant or cellular telephone. The speech processing system includes a speech recognizer residing on a first computing device and a speech model server residing on a second computing device. The speech recognizer receives speech training data and processes it into an intermediate representation of the speech training data. The intermediate representation is then communicated to the speech model server. The speech model server generates a speech reference model by using the intermediate representation of the speech training data and then communicates the speech reference model back to the first computing device for storage in a lexicon associated with the speech recognizer.

16 Dec 1997TL;DR: In this paper, the bitmap image data is analyzed by connected component extraction to identify components or connected components that represent either individual characters or letters, or regions of a nontext image.
Abstract: The bitmap image data is analyzed by connected component extraction to identify components or connected components that represent either individual characters or letters, or regions of a nontext image The connected components are classified as text or nontext based on geometric attributes such as the number of holes, arcs and line ends comprising each component A nearest-neighbor analysis then identifies which text components represent lines or strings of text and each line or string is further analyzed to determine its vertical or horizontal orientation Thereafter, separate vertical and horizontal font height filters are used to identify those text strings that are the most likely candidates For the most likely title candidates a bounding box is defined which can be associated with or overlaid upon the original bitmap data to select the title region for further processing or display Captions and photographs can also be located

15 Nov 1996TL;DR: In this paper, a printed wiring board (PWB) and assembly is described which are suitable for high density mounting of an electronic component and which can provide a thin and light assembly.
Abstract: A printed wiring board (PWB) and assembly are described which are suitable for high density mounting of an electronic component and which can provide a thin and light assembly. A recess (10) is formed in one part of a PWB (1) and components (4, 4') are received in this recess (10). The components (4, 4') are lower than the surface of the PWB (1). A conductive pad (3) is provided to the bottom of the recess (10) and a connecting terminal (4a) and the conductive pad (3) are electrically connected by using a solder ball (11) or a conductive adhesive material. The recess (10) is formed by partially removing one or more layers of plural conductive layers and insulating layers which make up the multilayer PWB (1).
