Journal ArticleDOI

UKPDS 25: autoantibodies to islet-cell cytoplasm and glutamic acid decarboxylase for prediction of insulin requirement in type 2 diabetes

TL;DR: In this article, the presence of either or both antibodies characterises a subtype of diabetes and provides better prediction of requirement for insulin therapy by 6 years' follow-up than clinical variables.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sequence variations in the human Kir6.2 gene, a subunit of the beta-cell ATP-sensitive K-channel: no association with NIDDM in while Caucasian subjects or evidence of abnormal function when expressed in vitro.

TL;DR: It is concluded that mutations in Kir6.2 are unlikely to be a major cause of NIDDM because there was no difference in the sensitivity of the whole-cell currents to metabolic inhibition or to the sulphonylurea tolbutamide.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic heterogeneity of autoimmune diabetes: Age of presentation in adults is influenced by HLA DRB1 and DQB1 genotypes (UKPDS 43)

TL;DR: Islet cell antibodies and glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies were strongly associated with DRB 1*03/DRB1*04-DQB1*0302 in early adulthood but showed little relation with specific HLA genotypes after the age of 55 years, while pronounced age heterogeneity in DRB1 and DQB1 predisposition to Type II diabetes was found.
Journal ArticleDOI

An association analysis of the HLA gene region in latent autoimmune diabetes in adults

TL;DR: Patterns of susceptibility at the H LA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 loci in LADA are similar to those reported for type 1 diabetes, supporting the hypothesis that autoimmune diabetes occurring in adults is an age-related extension of the pathophysiological process presenting as childhood-onset type 1 Diabetes.
