TLDR
The Mitochondrial Network Analysis (MiNA) toolset is described, a relatively simple pair of macros making use of existing ImageJ plug-ins, allowing for semi-automated analysis of mitochondrial networks in cultured mammalian cells.

Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy (4th edition)

Daniel J. Klionsky, +2983 more
- 08 Feb 2021 -
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a set of guidelines for investigators to select and interpret methods to examine autophagy and related processes, and for reviewers to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of reports that are focused on these processes.

Fragmented mitochondria released from microglia trigger A1 astrocytic response and propagate inflammatory neurodegeneration

TL;DR: It is shown that the expression of neurotoxic proteins associated with neurodegenerative diseases in microglia alone is sufficient to directly trigger death of naive neurons and to propagate neuronal death through activation of naive astrocytes to the A1 state, without affecting the release of healthy neuroprotective mitochondria.

The Intestine Harbors Functionally Distinct Homeostatic Tissue-Resident and Inflammatory Th17 Cells.

TL;DR: Comparisons of characteristics of Th17 cells differentiating in response to commensal bacteria (SFB) to those differentiating to a pathogen (Citrobacter rodentium) will help ensure that future therapies directed against inflammatory Th 17 cells do not inadvertently damage the resident gut population.

Dynamin-related protein 1 has membrane constricting and severing abilities sufficient for mitochondrial and peroxisomal fission

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that Drp1 is sufficient to constrict and sever mitochondrial and peroxisomal membranes in the absence of Dnm proteins, and is the dominant dynamin performing mitochondria and per oxisomal fission.

Nuclear sensing of breaks in mitochondrial DNA enhances immune surveillance

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that mtDNA double-strand breaks activate a type-I interferon response that involves the phosphorylation of STAT1 and activation of interferón-stimulated genes.
